Use clear tape to stick the two ends of the strip together.  I use the tape that is opaque used to wrap up presents.  Before u tape them together, make sure they are nice and tight.

Doesn't the reel strip act like a speaker cone and amplify noise that is already there? What I'm suggesting is that a loose strip may not be the cause of the problem

If the strip is on tight, vibrations are reduced.  I found on my S+ that if I put a strip with no tape, the resonance from the vibrating reel is really amplified.  Tightening with tape works for me.  You could also use dual sided tape and replace the original one.
