Hi NLG Forum,

I am new to NLG and slot machines, and this is my first post.  I am working on a Bally E-1091-44 that has been sitting for some time.  At first it was completely locked up.  With the help of this forum (unbelievable source of information) and the manual, I cleaned out the white tube and lubed the handle assembly.  The handle then worked smoothly, and the reels would spin, but they would not stop.  Next, I cleaned out the reel assembly (the block rods were frozen), so everything moved freely.  At this point the machine would show a 50 on startup which would go away with the first handle pull.  It would work correctly for 5 to 10 pulls, and then would show an error 71 and tilt.  Tests 2 through 7 all look good.  The voltages on the board were right on 5V, 7.5V and 10V, and the fuses were all correct and tested good.

Two days ago the machine showed a 2 in the second digit from the right on startup.  The lights and fan are on, but it will not respond to reset or test.  I tried pulling the ROM and RAM chips, and reseated them, but it still shows the 2 on startup.  The voltages are still good, and the fuses are all good.

From other posts it looks like this may be a RAM issue, but does anyone have any suggestions on what this may be or what to try next?

Is it a E1000 MPU board or has it been upgraded to the E2000 MPU.
Post a picture of of the MPU and we'll see.

That is a E1000 board.
This may be what your looking for.

"Is that 2 code with the 2 at the beginning or at the end of the display? If it is at the beginning of the display that would mean M2 is bad, if at the end of the display then it is a RAM failure.
It turned out to be the 5101 ram chip on the ram board were bad. Sorry for not getting back to report my findings sooner."

Your "2" is at the end so look at the Ram and Ram board.

Try taking the ram board off the MPU and look at the connectors. They get battery acid corrosion and tend to break. If they seem ok then it's possible that the 5101 ram chip have failed.

I pulled the ram board, and the pins all look good.  No sign of corrosion.  I ordered two new 5101 chips.  I will post an update when I install the new ram chips.

Make sure to check the female connectors on the ram board. Those are the ones that fail.

Thanks Gary.  I looked over the ram board.  The female connectors look good, and the solders on the back all look good.  I should have the new 5101 chips in a couple days.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you pick them up? They are getting a little tough to find..

Check the pin solder joints on the main board just to make sure.
They have been known to be the problem too.

A good deal of solid state pinballs use 5101 on the MPU board (Bally machines for sure) Marco Specialties should have them all the time.
This link will take you there.

There are several sellers on Ebay, and Marco Specialities shows the PCD5101p in stock.  On Marco's site it shows the PCD5101p as compatible with the SCM5101E-3 that I have.  Is this not the case?  My order has not shipped yet, so I can still cancel if the p's will not work.

If it says its compatible then I would use them. Thanks for the link Fatman.. I should have known they were still available some where. Just going off of what I was told.

Thanks for the suggestion proten.  I pulled the mpu and checked the solders.  They were all good, but when I pulled the board there were only 3 screws holding it in.  The top right screw was missing.  It appears that the mpu grounds off the top two screws.  When I replaced the screw it fired right up.  It then worked for a while until I got a 93 error.  I re-adjusted the #3 reader, and now it looks good.  We put about 200 coins through it with no errors.  Thank you all for all your input and advice.  My son could not wait for it to be working.
