Greetings community.

I have an older (1993 vintage) S5500 machine that has suddenly given me an error that no type of saferam clear will work on.

It is error #84 (followed with 4 flashes of the button lights):   RAM Error Volatile RAM failed to retain information during a self-test.

Battery is checked an good.

Thanks in advance!

I've got the same exact problem on my brother-in-law's machine.  Manual states the 4 "flash rate" is volatile RAM write/read failure (U67 & U68). I'm wondering if I can swap those same-numbered chips from my California Dreamin' machine to verify that the chips in the Black & White  are bad  without ruining my good chips.

Try removing U67 & U68 and then reinstalling them and see if the reseating resolves the issue.

Tried that previously, including cleaning pins & spraying with cleaner.  No bent pins.
Tried it again, per your suggestion.
Still Get 84 code immediately on power up while holding pseudo coin & test buttons, jw10 in postion for safe ram clear.
Also tried same procedure using clear chips, same result.
