What does this error mean?

I got this on a machine, what is it and how can I resolve it?

EEprom on motherboard (backlane)  is acting up. If a clear chip does not fix it, you need to replace eeprom on the motherboard, it is a small 8 pin serial chip.

Where can I find one of these and what is the location on the backplane board for it?

It is the only socketed 8 pin dip chip in the motherboard.  I don't remember the IC number off the top of my head, but they are not that expensive and you can buy them at mouser.com

Here's a picture of an enhanced one, the older style, is a bit further down, but in the general vicinity as this one.

It is a 24C16, I would try to remove and re insert mpu into motherboard
Also try clearing the error by turning the jp key a few times and closing the door.
if you have a spare motherboard swap the chips.
Machine settings, accounting, game states are stored on the EEPROM.

Well it can't be the backplane board, it has to be the main board instead. I tried it in another working machine and still have the same issue. I get to the point if "EPROM error" I turn the jackpot reset key 3 times and it never clears, just goes back to see attendant and EPROM error any thing else I could check ?

I checked foe bent pins on the SB chip and the 2 sets of pins that connect to the backplane board and all were fine. I did have a spare main board and I swapped out the two large square INTEL chips and now the game is working fine.

So, it had to be the INTEL chips?

If the pins on the MPU you swapped out were fine, then we have a solution!! Just curious, as if we can pinpoint this error, it's one more off the list!

Yes it definitely had to be one of those 2 chips

Just for grins if you haven't scraped the Intel chips I would try reinstalling them.
I have had to remove and install these chips on a few boards to clear errors.
Mild oxidation/corrosion will also affect these sockets as well so just removing and reinstalling may have been all you needed. You might end up with few more good spare parts.
