What do you recommend as the most useable Set Chip?  I realize this kind of like asking whats the best car etc...
I have a set026, and I want to get at least 1 more.  Overall which chip is the most useful for various S+ machines?
At the moment I dont really need progressive features, etc. but who knows in the future Scratch Head

I use Set026 for most things. It lets me do a penny with the GameChips that support it or a nickle on ones that don't.
I use Set090 which only works with later game chips. Ie it won't work with a 731 and it handles the progressive options.

I have recently ocme across Set086 which is documented in the thread below regarding Montanna Credits.

In order of preference:

Set 90 for everything unless it is not supported by earlier chips.
Set 15 for everything else (I don't use penny denom)

I have been using the SET086 for the Montana/euro credits SP1137 chip in my home games...
it's fun throwing in as many coins as you wish.....it adds every coin to the credits display.

Will the set086 work with a 731?

set 086 will enable DBV and set denomination, but the token value and the montana (or euro) style credits are not supported by SP731.

I don't think it is compatible with a 731

I don't have a SET086 PSR but SET087 which does do Tokens reads:
Program Summary Report:  S-Plus Set Chip Version SET087

USING THE SET CHIP
Turn the machine power off.  Remove the game chip.  Install the set chip.  Turn the machine power on.  Credits window = set chip version.  Winner Paid window = any tilts detected during power up.

65_4 Advisory Message:  If the set chip is not compatible with the game options, Winner Paid window = 65_4.  To clear this tilt, turn the power off.  Remove the set chip.  Install the correct set chip.

Generally speaking the 65_4 usually means that it doesn't work with older game chips but as this is not SET086 and it is not definitive in what the min requirements are

==============================================================================================================================
The PSR from SP731 Reads:

Set-chip IGT utility program SETOO5, SET01 5, or SET017 is required to modifj the
denomination and enable/disable the bill acceptor. SET017 is required to select
the SAS Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) option. Before the EFT option can be
selected with the set-chip, perform the following steps: install the game chip,
enter the self test mode, specie IGT SAS as the accounting system
communication type, select a non-zero mini system address, and exit the self test
mode.

We know that this is not-all inclusive as the Set026 will work with a 731 - i was released after the 731 and obviously post this document
So while Set086 "might" work your going to need to plug it in and try it - if you get the 65_4 message then the answer is no\

Sorry I can't be much more help..... perhaps someone else has a more definitive answer.

I stand corrected.  I thought I had used SET090 at one point or another with an SP731, but it could just be old age creeping in...  Scratch Head 3 Scratch Head 3 Scratch Head 3

Here are some of my old notes, does not include all SPs.

SET015        For many older games. SP731 (Turns on DBV and sets amount)
SET058        For SP1048  (w/stand alone progressive)
SET086        For SP946, SP1048, SP1137 (Montana)
SET090        For SP1145, SP1146, SP1160, SP1153, SP1271, SP1306 (Also for 1 cent on DBV)

The SET 086 instructions are actually written inside the SP1137 PSR sheet on page 3.

My preferences:

SET026 for 731 and other older SP chips. Preferred over 015 because of penny option on some chips.
It costs nothing to have the extra capability and is otherwise the same, so why buy a 15 when you could'a had a 26? bust gut laughing  cocktail
SET090 for newer chips and setting up progressives with them.
SET086 for Montana credit chips as already noted.

Have not tried the SET058 for SP1048 Scratch Head  I'll have to look into that one.. stir the pot / get cooking

Since I am going to be tinkering with the chips (I can't help myself!) Is there a correct type of ZIF socket I need to get?
I will be going to Fry's for some computer stuff and I should be able to get a zif there..

Any IF socket will do...just make sure it 's for 28-pins.
Low profile ZIF's are more expensive but the green blocks will work too!

Here's a good link that'll help ya get started>>>
