I just changed a battery on a S+ with code 12. I put the board back and turned it on expecting to get 61. The machine just booted up and was ready to play. Never had that happen before. Is that normal if there were no credits on machine when the battery died?

IGT has the battery voltage monitoring circuit configured above the minimum voltage to maintain its memory, also all the critical data that needs to be kept is written to the EEPROM on the motherboard every 100 plays. You can tell its occurring when the S+ takes extra time to be ready to play after a game is completed.

I suspect a capacitor may also be connected to the CMOS chip as a 2nd Backup that lasts for a short term - long enough for a tech to change the battery, remember as long as the machine is on the battery and/or cap is not being used and the cap stays fully charged.

You may have gotten lucky as well.

They said it had been on 12 for 2 months. 61 then 61-1 and so on is no big deal. I have done hundred's of batteries and this was a first. Glad it is kind of normal.

Was all the internal accounting still intact? If so...wow!
Musta been still enough residual juice to keep the memory going!

When I put a volt meter on it had -8 which I thought odd also. And yes my leads were right.
