Bally E2216 help

working on a Bally Continental 4 reel 1989 E2216 machine for a friend. It was working but sat for a few years. I replaced the battery because it was dead. When you power on the machine it lights up and the display shows 50 .0.00  . will not accept coins, they go into hopper, not returned. Press the test button and you get 50.0.006 on display no matter how many times you press it. pressing the reset you get a 00001 on display and goes back to 50.0.00. I have checked door switch and it works. I can not enter any test mode. Also checked all the fuses...reseated all connectors and plugs.
Any ideas??? I usually do not mess with EM stuff..

One thing that you might want to try is unplugging the IO board and see if you then get a 50 0000 code and can run tests. None of the tests will
pass but what we are looking for is the ability to get into the test mode.

If you get the 50 000 code then the problem is likely to be on the IO card and the first thing I do on those is to take a wire brush to all
of the contact pins.

unplugged all connectors on I/o board and turned on. get 500.0.00 on display. each and every time I press the test button I get 500.0.06 when pressed and returns to 500.0.00 when released. Also there is a relay behind the hopper on the floor of cabinet that clicks to match each press of the test button.  Also when everything is plugged in there is a solenoid behind the handle mech all by itself that energizes every 30 seconds or so. it has nothing hooked to it. just looks like a noise maker...

So far this is sounding like an MPU board problem. Is this an E2000 MPU board or and E1000 MPU board. Some E2000 machines used E1000 MPU's
so that is why I ask. The E2000 MPU will have the battery and RAM mounted directly to the board and the E1000 will have a daughter card for
the battery and ram. The actual board make little difference at the moment but may become relevant later.

Some of the things that I have seen is bad connections under the 8T28 chips that are close to the plug where the IO cable goes. I have also seen
bad connections under the bipolar proms. When I am talking about bad connections, these may or may not be visible so is best just to reflow some
solder and see if that helps.

I have seen  bad bipolar proms cause similar problems and that is where the E1 vs E2 comes in because they are different data in the proms for
each of the boards

First of all the battery you replaced was a rechargeable 3.6 volt NIMH battery.
The lithium cell you replaced it with will most likely pop as it is not to be recharged.

Will get that corrected. Someone had replaced it with the same type as I installed. A non-rechargeable.

OK, made some progress after checking solder joints and connectors. I can now access the test menus. The machine looks like it is ready to play and the insert coin light is lit. It will not accept coins. in test 3 (switch test) I get the 3..0.0.1 when the coin switch in moved down. and I get the 3 when hopper roller arm is moved.
Test 4 hopper test does nothing and hopper does not run and I get a 32 hopper empty code.
test 8 game function test sits at 80.000 and coin in does not register or change display when coin is input or coin switch moved

Progress is progress.

If you can not accept coins then possibly Q18 is bad but if the coin deflector isn't pulling in then Q17. There is also U5 , a 74174
that is associated with both of the triacs and I have seen lots of those go bad.

Your test 4 problem may be the hopper board and quite possibly the MAC15-6 triac of one of the 2 SCR's mounted near it.

Coins are going to hopper and deflector is energized.

In that case I would try and swap Q18. If you don't have one on hand then perhaps swap it with the one in Q29. That port and bit is not
used by most machines but if the dipswitch on the MPU board has sw-4 turned on then it may well use it for some feature.

Swapped Q18 and Q29......no change

About all I can suggest now is to send me the boards and I can test them. If you don't want them fixed then there were no problems
then there wouldn't be any charge.

OK I agree..but worst case this thing needs a new MPU or Hopper board or both we are looking at $150 range if they can not be fixed...What is this machine worth? I hate to see this guy spend a few hundred when I could sell him a 6000 for a few dollars more. I like preserving old stuff too but at a price. He got this for free and it was suppose to be a s6000 but to my surprise he dropped this off for help.
