Misc univerals slot questions from a new board member

Hi everyone,

I am new to the board. I found you after visiting a  friends house earlier today who owns a universal silver bullet slot.  It is flashing the following error codes: a 13,21,41,50. 

The machine was stored for awhile and currently is not giving credit for coins.  I also noticed that code 21 is a coin jam, and there is no jam.  I cleaned the optics and made sure that the coin went through with no hangups.  The coin comparator is a non powered plastic unit. It has a quarter acceptance slot on the door with a return change button next to it.

The reels are all plugged in to their receptacles and appear to move easily by hand.

When I power down the unit and bring it back with the door locked and closed it still flashes the above referenced codes.  Since I am not experienced in Uni slots I did not want to go pushing buttons willy nilly...lol.   I read in a previous post that you can pull the white door button out, and lock the latch with the door open.  I have yet to do that.

I also read that there is a white reset button that is on side mounted mpu on the left side of the slot.  I have yet to try a reset as well.

In another post on the board it talks about reseating the MPU. Is there an easy way to reseat it?  I noticed it has a handle on it, but like I said being new to the uni machines I was hesitant to go pulling on things...

I noticed that my friend appears to have 75 cents in quarters in the hopper...a high roller...lol.  I imagine this will toss out an error if it tries to pay out

If any of you have the time, could you please advise as to what may be the problem, and how I can resolve the problem(s).

Welcome to the board Knight!
You gave a lot of good details about the problems with this machine, but I need a little more info.
Sounds like this machine has either the 8116 board or the 8800 board. Could even be an Ultra Series, but I doubt that based on your description.
Do you know which board it has?
If the board is side mounted on the left, is there a three wire red connector at the bottom front coming out of the metal case?
If yes, it's an 8800. If no, it's a 8116.
Checkout the pic's below and you can see the difference between the 8800 case and 8116 case.
And what hopper does it have?  The heavy green one, a plastic red one, or an ashi-seiko?

But all this added info may not be needed if a RAM clear solves your problem.
With the machine off and door open, press the reset switch located at the right-side/bottom/middle of the board case. (through the round hole) The 8800 has a tiny white push button, the 8116 has a bigger black push button.
Hold this button in while turning on the machine. Continue to hold it in for about three seconds while it is powering up and release it.

The Error Codes;
Errors 13 and 50 you get everytime you power up the machine with the door open. Error 13 is "Power interuption" and is more a message than an error. Error 50 is door open. Error 50 can be tricky, here's why!!  Under normal conditions you power up a Universal and get 13 and 50. You close and lock the door and 13 & 50 continue to blink until a game is initiated. Once a game starts, error messages are gone. But what if the machine doesn't see the door closed even though you closed it? Error 50 & 13 would continue to blink but the coins just fall through. (In the Ultra Series they added error 51 which means door was open-now closed to solve this situation)
Errors 21 and 41 are 21-Coin-in-jam and 41-first reel improper spin. Unlike errors 13 & 50 these two errors cause a TILT and the tilt light should be flashing. Nothing is going to work until that tilt light stops flashing. Once corrected these errors immediately disappear and the tilt light goes out after pushing the yellow reset button.
First thing to try is press the yellow reset button. If that doesn't work, find the problem. (like you did by checking the hopper) Then perform a RAM clear. Sometimes stubburn errors need a RAM clear.

Now, about the hoppers. If this machine has worked in the past and no parts (hoppers) have been replaced or dip switches on the MPU board been messed with, then a RAM clear should do it. But every different hopper type requires a different dip setting.

A long winded answer, but hope this helps! Let us know either way.

Many thanks for your reply Uniman. From what I have been reading on the board you are the universal slot expert.

I believe based on your pictures, and the fact that it does not have a BV in it, that the board is an 8116.  It also has a non colored,ordinary looking silver metallic hopper sitting in it which i did not pull out when I was there.

Thanks for your great advice, the next time I can get over there I will see if the door switch is engaging. If it isn't then I will have to adjust it.  Then I will do a ram clear and see if that solves my problem, ( or shall I say, my friends problem!).  I will def report back with what happened once I am able to get back over there.

Until I can get to try your suggestions, I will continue to browse and lurk on the board...Lots of great info here.

I would not worry about the door switch until you get rid of errors 21 & 41.
When I said; ("Once corrected these errors immediately disappear and the tilt light goes out.") should have added; after pushing the yellow reset button.

Thank you Uniman...  I am not sure what may be causing the 21 and 41 errors.. I looked at all the reels and reseated all the plugs.  I also hand turned the reels and did not notice any binding.  I also took apart the coin chute and cleaned everything up including that plastic comparator and the 3 optics.

When I return I will push the yellow button and do a reset.  If that does not work I will do a ram clear with the mpu.  How would you reseat the mpu if you wanted to do that as well?

The 8816 and 8800 boards seat pretty good. Rarely have to reseat them. It is the Ultra Series boards that have all the trouble with making connection.


With the machine off, unplug the two connectors coming out of the MPU and unscrew the MPU case handle (if it is screwed down) and wiggle slightly up and down while pulling straight up. Should slide out. To reseat just slide it in and push it in. Should feel it snug right in.

I just wanted you to know that I went over to my friends and was able to do a ram clear which took care of all the problems with the exception of the 21 error code.  When I closed the door it would display a code 50.  I thought I was home free until I put in a quarter and immediately was given a code 21 by the slot.  That was pretty puzzling until I thought perhaps I should switch the wires powering the optics on the coin chute.  Once I did that the slot machine kicked into life and started taking quarters.  It gave me credits and the reels spun as expected.  The bottom line was it took care of the problem.

I really appreciated your quick response to the posting of my problem.  Your suggestions were instrumental to the slot being fixed.  The slot handle was not working, but my friend was so happy he told me not to worry about it that he would push the buttons..lol.

That was a good call by swapping the optic wires. 
The 8116 board requires a small daughter board for most games. When this daughter board is missing you can get random 21 errors.

I will continue to lurk around the board. All of my expertise comes from being a hybrid slot attendant / tech  for a small 198 slot casino in Cripple Creek Colorado.  I worked on IGT and Aristocrat.  I never worked on a Universal before..  Just think, with you guys I can pass myself off as an expert to all my friends...

wow, that was awesome...I definitely need to find a slot to play with.. I even live in a state (texas) which allows me to do just that..
