The manual states that options can't be changed in the midle of a game or when credits are on the machine.  I've got neither, but it still displays "err" when I try to change any setting.  What gives?!?

Which options? Some can only be set immediately following a SafeRam clear. (Or it could be a different issue.)

Really?  I bet that's it.  I mean any option at all - hopper limit, hand pay amount, mechanical bell on, anything...  Every option code flashes "err" if I try to hit the SPIN button to change the value.  I know one of my machines was accepting value changes, then I cleared it, I think I might have played one game, and then the same thing.  The last time I cleared that machine was some time ago, nd I know I've played it since then.

I'll have to watch closely as I do each machine but so far I'm two-for-two on "read-only" systems, one of them I'm sure I just had going.

It couldn't have to do with DIP 1 SW8 (SafeRAM Clear) could it?  I see some people leaving that ON when I would think it should be set off.

Thay all depends on your mains.  Some settings should be changeable as long as there aren't any credits.  Press the spin button and see if the bet one button had been pressed(game not complete).  The validation and machine directed payment require a clear.  I leave dip 8 on, actually, I leave that whole bank on.

At this point I'm thinking that the DIP switches on the board are set incorrectly. If they had been changed at some point, the changes would not take effect until the machine was cleared, so you wouldn't have realized that there was anything out of place until you performed the clear and the machines stopped working.

The first thing that I would check would be the market code setting: Dip Switch 3, switches 1-4 and 5-8. If they are set to a weird Country code it could cause a problem like this.

I know I would have set the market to Vegas, that's actually how they were when I got them anyway.  I verified everything else and SafeRAM cleared a few days before I tried to modify the options.  The manual didn't say anything particular about "only after a clear" if I can recall, but that may be it.

I'm not trying to change anything high-security like denominations etc, just trying to turn the printer on etc.  But even something trivial like "mechanical bell ring at" err's out if I try to change it.  Anything, any setting at all.  I'm wondering about that switch 8 really, and I'll try to see if "immediately after a RAM clear" is an issue.  I'll also try the whole bank switched on as suggested, report pending...
