Forget Michael Jackson... I have been much more upset over the death of Billy Mays.

I was a huge fan of "Pitchmen" and never missed an episode.  Mays was a real guy - someone who was grateful for everything he had received in life.  He believed in what he "pitched" and that's, in part, what made him a success.  He evidently missed much as a young father, and it is clear that he tried to make up for lost time with his son and not let that happen again with his new family.  He loved his parents and extended family and never forgot his roots.  He would go back often to McKees Rocks, PA and visit the old neighborhood, even after hitting the big time.  He was a product of his background and he never forgot that.  Mays also had a tremendous spirit for giving back to others.  He knew that inventors worked years upon years, devoting tremendous amounts of time and money to the development of products.  He lived, in part, to see others achieve success.    The tribute to him on last evening's Discovery show was genuine and well-done.  You really get the sense of how people loved Billy Mays and how is exuberant on-air personality was a far cry from his off-screen persona.

It is difficult to fathom why really good people are taken from us so early, and why some of the biggest %$#&* in life (a la Madoff), we're stuck with for the foreseeable future.   We're left with memories of how good these people made us feel and how their lives made us feel a bit better.  I am reminded of the line from the movie "Gladiator":  "What we do in life, echos in eternity."  For me, this means that the person we are, the things we do, the impressions we make and the people we touch, lives well beyond our years here.  Billy Mays will continue to live on in the memories of many, many people.

Thanks Billy Mays for brightening many a day....
