   Noisy reels

Okay I have another Question...  The reels on the s2000 are reelly noisey! it almost sounds like there catching on something only there not.  I took my pinbal reels out and tried them in it and the same thing... only there very quiet in my pinball machine any idea's on that one?

Try removing the reel strips completely and running it to see if it in fact a reel strip causing the noise or if you have a noisey stepper motor.

What causes the reel strips to be noisy?

rubbing against something. And a reel strip can amplify the noise coming from a reel motor too, the thin plastic acts like a speaker

But if he put in reels from another machine that were quiet in the other machine and are now noisy???

I had a similar problem with one of my old Universals, turned out to be a weak power supply making the noise, not the reels.

Had a similar problem.  My player display bar (the one behind the reel glass that shows the credits, coins played, etc) was a bit loose and the one of the reels was actually rubbing on the edge of the display bar.  I re-seated the bar and the problem was solved.  If you cannot see if it's rubbing, you can use a lead pencil and paint the edge of the reels, play it a couple of times and then look for "tire marks"  Remember the old rigged quarter down the person's nose prank?

My S+ is almost silent without the reel strips installed, I changed the reels with no improvement. It definitely sounds like a loose part vibration, but will go away with the slightest finger pressure on the strips themselves.

Guess I'll hunt down some new reel strips.

One thing I have tried on reels is to place a small piece of masking take between the baskets, 90º apart.

Many times the problem with IGT reels (S-Slot & S+Slot) is that the reels loosen up on the motor shaft...the easiest fix is to mash the metal keeper back against the plastic reel holder...just don't mash it TOO hard!

I found a thread or 2 on that and gave it a try, but no luck. I even replaced the keeper on the loudest reel I had, and tried the heat shrink tubing. It's kind of frustrating because the RWB my friend just picked up is almost silent, so I know it's not a matter of "they all do that" (a phrase I used to hear all the time when I worked on cars for a living).

If the reels are silent without a strip installed, that means that your strip is a bit loose on the basket.  When you install the strip tighten it up so that it's snug on the reel baskets and use double sided tape to secure them.

One thing to look for:
  On the # 66001400 half of the basket, the "hub" where you affix the metal stop washer can develop a hairline crack.  It is hard to see, but if you look closely you can see it.  You can also push a pencil through the shaft hole and gently attempt to spread the opening to see if you can expose the crack.  This hairline crack will cause noisy reel mechs.  You can either silicone the crack, or replace 66001400.

Didn't read close enough the first time to see that he tried different reels, sorry.  I would probably try switching MPU's if both sets of reels were noisey.  The drive circuits for the reels are on the MPU.  It could be a power supply problem, but an MPU swap is a easier.  If it is a power supply, there could be a number of causes most likely in the power circuit for the motors.

I have a 5cm Triple Diamond that has a noisey reel 1, so I got a replacement motor & basket assembly.  I plan to run the noisey one until something either quits working or smokes.  Either way, maybe I can determine the casue.

It almost seem's like s2000 are so much more unstable compared to the s + Which surprises me since there suposto be so much better.  But i'm sure it went threw tons and tons of use at the casino's

The S+ is by FAR a more stable platform.  The only reason the S+ got pulled is because IGT refused to make them TITO, otherwise, casinos would still be using them (and some still do).  Most Slot Techs will agree with me regarding the reliability of an S+ vs. S2000.

I think there have been some attempts by third parties to crate TITO adapters for the S+ but IGT has invoked legal action. They want that platform dead so they can sell more. What suprizes me though is that the S2000 can use all the native Reel Chips.  So how dead is it really.

It's a way to sell old software at today's prices.  It's a lot easier to sell the old reel eproms that have already passed gaming comissions and require no further developement.  By EOL'ing the S+ they gain:

1.  Sell ALL NEW hardware plus parts, etc.
2.  Keep milking the old S+ cow software.
3.  Give the casinos a way to re-use their old glass/reels, while getting them to buy a new platform plus a MM lite board plus a sound simm.

I used a piece of Scotch tape to pull the reel strip tight, noise is a lot quieter now.

I noticed it looks like the strips are starting to delaminate? Anyone seen this before, and could that be the cause?

I have a couple of sets with parts that are de-laminating as well.  It does not seem to me at least that it's a contributing factor, but it could be.  Whenever I just use the scotch tape method, it solves the problem though.

You guys probably know this, but I thought I'd mention it just in case someone reads this that hasn't has the experience of changing or re-applying reel strips.

Scotch Scrapbook tape seems to work the best for me.  It's basically just double-sided Scotch tape, but has a very strong adhesive that holds up well under the florescent and heat conditions of the interior of the cabinet.  I found it in the local Wal-Mart next to the photo albums.

To add to Tom's ......I split the  Scrapbook tape in half (cutting two narrow strips) if you don't need a lot of holding power. Makes them peel apart easier when changing to a new game.

I got my new reels today ... But i also feel stupid in another sence, I put them in and they sounded quieter, but it was still making a noise so i looked up really close while they were spinning and the wires that go across the top light on the door have been hitting the reels all this time! .  But i put them up and they are very silent!  So anyway that was the problem.  I have not put one of the older reels in yet to see if it was silent all this time to i bet they were.  I'll have to check em out and see.

  I had this problem too, those plastic zip ties don't hold up well in the machines with alot of heat, brittle and break. Don't feel too stupid I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the cashout button base (I just pulled it out and left it hanging) rubbing on a reel strip, didn't know it till it had scored the whole reel strip and ruint it.
