with 0 credits, push the self test switch to page 4 turn the jackpot reset key

set your options to 00 00 00 and turn the reset key again, should spin to the start of the reel strip.

Or easier, open the machine and feel the sides of the reel baskets for the index bumps and make sure the notch in the reel strip is on them

The game type (0, 1, 4, 5, or 19) and the first two digits of the reel-strip number are alternately displayed in the Winner Paid window.  The version number and the last four digits of the reel-strip number are alternately displayed in the Credits window.  To enter the paytable test, turn the jackpot reset key.  To test paytable values, the physical stops for all the reels must be entered.  To input and increment the physical stop, press the Spin Reels button.  Winner Paid window = physical stop.  Credits window = reel number.  To select the next reel, turn the jackpot reset key.  After selecting the physical stop for the last reel, turn the jackpot reset key to spin the reels to the entered physical stops.  After the reels stop, the pay amount for the reel combination is displayed in the Winner Paid and Credits windows, and it alternates with the number of coins bet in the Winner Paid window.  To view all award amounts, from one coin wagered up to the max bet, press the Spin Reels button.  If the game is Type 19 and the physical stops and coin amounts for a bonus award is entered, paylines one, two, and three blink.

So if you self test to page 4 and turn the reset key 4 times it'll go to position 1 of all 3 reel strips

Just to clarify, the home position of the strips should put the seam on the payline. Also, Brianzz's instructions are correct for the later SP chips like SP1271. If you have an earlier chip like SP731, then advance one more test to page 5 (instead of page 4) and simply press the spin button once. The reels should spin to the seams.

Okay,
I would like to throw a little monkey wrench into this...
but for a very good reason...Please bear with me...

Sometimes the reels won't stop on the seams...why?
Because certain games themes have paytables that actually pay out credits for "blanks"...

When that particular reel chip is installed ,
one of the reel seams during that test will stop at one full symbol-step above the payline...follow?

Stout, that's correct, but it only applies to the default reel positions after a clear or game change. If you enter test page 4 or 5 as described above and spin to position 01, all three strips will spin to the seam. In option 4 (if you have a later SP chip and can specify the physical stop that you want to test for each reel) if three blanks are a winning combination, the subsequent presses of the spin button will indicate the amount won for each coin bet. On page 5, it will indicate the virtual stop regardless of the outcome displayed. Older SP chips advance one virtual stop at a time in ascending order and actually spin the reels to the physical stop associated with each virtual stop (very time consuming). Later SP chips allow the user to select each of the three physical stops (as in page 4). The slot then spins to the stops once and indicates the range of virtual stops for each reel with subsequent presses of the spin button.

yes,
the way I had mentioned was when you do a clear or game chip change...good catch!
Setting the reels to stop, like the way you said, will always put the reel seams online.... yes
