Universal Mustang

Hi all.... New to the forum.... But I have had this universal Mustang for sometime now..... It was given to me because it would error out form time to time and need some sort of reset...
I had found how to do this but I can not remember now.... Its been sitting in storage for awhile now... and Im putting together a small apartment (behind the house) for my son who is currently in Iraq... (I havent been long gotten back from Afghanistan myself, military family) But as I recall when putting in quarters it would error... (I dont remember the code) but right now it is showing 50, 13, and 11 I think.... I will verify tonight and see what the exact codes are...  No BV in this machine strictly quarters.... in really nice condition but I would like to make sure everything is fully functional.... I also have a few skill stops and an electronic background so working on this shouldnt be an issue.... If someone can steer me in the right direction would be great... I have read that it could be board connections?

Also how can I tell the model number? and how can I chance the payout %?

Welcome to the site William and thank you from all of us for serving our great nation. 

The Mustang was one of Universal's finest machines. Unfortunatly I've never owned one.  But I do know a little about them.
It has an 8800 board. On the board case there is a hole where you can push a small reset button. You push and hold it in on startup to clear the RAM. Right now you do not need to clear the RAM.
Error 50 is the door is/was open. It won't clear until a coin is inserted.
Error 13 is recovered from power fail. So when you turn it on expect to see error 13. Again it will clear when coin is inserted.
Error 11 is low voltage. This often appears at startup but should go away when the power supply reaches proper voltage. If it does not, press the yellow reset button. If error 11 persists after pressing the reset, you could have a power supply problem and the game will not play.
The main thing to look for is after closing the door do you see the "insert coin" light flashing. This tells you the machine is ready for play. If the tilt light is flashing the game will not play until the tilt condition is corrected.

The 8800 board does not have board connection problems. The Ultra Series 94014 board does.
You say you remember errors when putting coins in. What type/brand of coin comparitor do you have? Too many coins played will cause a tilt. The proper comparitor, working properly, will prevent this.
Universal really did not have a model number. They used the game number as the model number. To see the game number you use the test button. Let me check one of my 8800 boards and make sure what test it is.
The way to change percent payout is to change game eproms. No way to do that by switches, etc.
Eproms for Mustang games are hard to find I would think.

I attached the pics I hope they show up It is now showing 50 (door open) will not go away and 62.... I was able to with the door open hit the service button (accepted coins) and spin the reels... everything else seems to be in order...

I'm pretty sure the error 62 has to with the bonus game. I would first try a reset on the 8800 board.

If memory serves me right  a code like that is showing that the bottom cpu is not talking to the top cpu .   Do a lower clear like UNIMAN has suggested, then remove the top glass and the light fixture should pivot down and expose the cpu unit for the top box. it was located in the far aft lefthand cornor.  there are two buttons on this unit. they are used to clear the unit. after clearing the bottom cpu, then clear the top unit in the same manner. (hold buttons down and apply power as you did for the bottom unit.  I think you will also see a red led on as indicating the power supply is working. If you have a good clear you will see three colors in a test pattern come on the display in the top box.  if that happens then your machine should work as advertised.

Thanks for all the input..... Jim I think you might be on the right track... as I see no lights on the bonus game.... I will see if I can figure out how to do the resets... (rather where the reset buttons are hahah) Will try and do this tonight and will report back tomorrow....

If your board is mounted vertically on the left side next to the hopper, then do this to reset the RAM;
Open the door to the machine.
Lift up the coin tray and remove.
At the bottom of the board case facing the hopper, there is a round hole right in the middle.
If you have to, pull out the hopper past this hole, but don't unplug the hopper.
Put your finger in the hole and push in the tiny reset button. Hold the button in while turning on the power. Continue to hold the button in for about 2-3 seconds while the machine boots up.
This will reset the RAM on the 8800 board.

Similiar to Jim, this way has worked about 10 times .
  With power OFF. find the "ALL-CLR' button in the top unit, in the grey controller box. Hold it down for 15 sec.and turn power ON. Keep holding it down another 5 sec.. Release the button  and the display says "RAM CLEAR END" but the Tilt and the "62" continue. Shut off power. To the left of the hopper is a long box with a hole the size of a 50c coin. Put your finger into this hole and press and hold this button while turning the power back ON. Now release the button. The machine should work.  If this fails, hold down both  buttons in the controller box. Follow the same routine only press the yellow reset button. Sometimes this  whole routine takes several tries.
