Hi Folks--My Bally S5500 works great--only thing is that occasionally the sound volume will drop to nearly zero--next pull it comes right back up--Not all that sure what could cause this--also if I turn the volume up I get a loud humming in the speaker (sometimes it sounds like it is coming straight out of the coin comparitor)--not really a problem but is annoying at best--Maybe one of you folks might be able to isolate the cause--Thanks: John Scratch Head

Visually inspect the speaker wiring...
I think you may have a bad ground wire.
Oh, By the way, your speaker is located directly underneath the coin comparitor...
That may explain why the sound is coming from there.
Check for loose coins behind the coin mechanism...there may also be a coin jamming up the divertor gate.

do Bunkers checks then if you have another speaker to try, it may help.  I have had a few bad speakers on these in the past.

Thanks,
Wayne

Will do--I think it could be the speaker--it only does this after it is played for a while--then it is fine--I have looked fore the 3x5 oval speakers--and there isn't alot out there--does anyone know where you can get these speakers???--(they used to be popular for car speakers way way back in the day)-anyway--- not a major issue--just seeing if someone could shed some light on the annoyance--John

Places such as radio shack may carry them...
sometimes you'll also find them at other places like
home depot, lowes in the home improvement dept
where they keep speakers for home sound systems.
Car audio installment places also carry various kinds and
I've even seen some at kmarts, walmarts in the car audio areas.
The connectors may not be the same but you can easily find
some kind of crimp-type connectors in the same aisles.
Just make sure you get the right size for the speaker tabs you buy.

I hate to drag this thread from the dead but I am curious if the new speaker had fixed your problem. I am having the exact same problem with my 5500 and wanted to see how you made out before throwing new parts at the problem.

The problem was resolved with the speaker--somehow a small nut had found its way onto the magnet and was causing it to give out a low volume or a distorted sound--once that was removed all worked well--I did use the two new speakers as external speakers tied into the main speaker--it works OK but you don't get any great sound improvement--I still am curious about adding a newer sound board to the 5500--my post asking this question has yet to get any replies--I guess the topic isn't all that interestinmg--anyway try looking around your speaker to see if any thing has attached itself the the magnet--Thanks: John T
