S6000 Reel tilt

AUGH!!!!  OK  started having lots of reel tilts on the #2 reel.  moved the reel; tilts would follow the position of the reel.  Took off reel strip and played for about 30 minutes; everything fine; no reel tilts.  Put reel strip back on and #2 reel would not move, wouldn't even initiate.  and would receive a 40 error code.  swapped #2 & #1 reel to see if it was the reel or connector and it was the connector?  (#1 reel wouldn't initiate while plugged into the #2 spot, #2 of course would while plugged into the #1 spot)  Put them back in their original position and re-checked connector ends, saw nothing, pulled out control board, did visual inspection, saw nothing, re-installed the control board, turned machine on - now reels #1 & #2 won't move, just #3 & #4.  And when I say "they won't move", I mean they are not getting any juice whatsoever.  After turning on and off a few more times, I now have an 88 code and the machine of course does nothing.  One thing I can tell is that when the machine is on, reels #3 & #4 are being held in place like normal by whatever it is that holds them in their spot.  But reels #1 & #2, nothing i.e. I can turn reels 1 & 2 freely with my hand but 3 & 4, you can feel are being held in place by the reel motor.  If this means anything to anybody, please help cause I believe the men in the white coats are on their way.  Mike

What you have to do before anything else is double check the wire harness going from the reels to the back circuit board.  If reel 1 and 2 are moving freely they have no connection to the slot at all.

I would unplug the harness, inspect very carefully at both ends and  I would also use  a continuity tester on each wire just make sure no wires are broken.

Once your 100% sure the harness is fine I would reassemble and do a complete ram clear.  The next step would be to look at the power supply.

Checked the wire harness using an continuity tester all was good. Put in my safe ram clear chips. held the test and pseudo coin button turned on the machine and  nothing.   Rechecked everthing and all was correct and tried again and still nothing. So what now?   Mike

O.K., before you get a new main board, check the pins in the connector at the rear of the mainboard where it plugs into the backplane board.  These often bend or push through.  I would also check the voltages with the main board not installed in the machine. failing these, it's time to change the main board.  If you put the mains back in, is it still no display?

OK Wayne check the pins all OK.  Checked the with the main board out and the volts are the same as before. Now here the interesting part with the main board out while the machine is go then the main board can't have any affect on the current going to the reel motor yet #1 & #2  spin freely and #3 and #4 are being held in place by the current.  Make me think that something other than the main board is keeping the first twos reel from getting any current.
Maybe the backplane board of maybe the power supply.  What do you think?. When I put the mains back in I will post if I have a display.

did you unplug and plug back in the 3 and 4 reels to see if they do it after that.  They usually stay energized until you do that.

Ok while i had the main board out and the machine on i reached in and pushed up on the reel contector that that plugs into the backboard plane and wah la
the reels 1 & 2 came to life. But I still get nothing when trying to do a safe ram clear. When I put the mains back in yes I have a display, 88 9 in the Win Paid
and the credits that I had at the time of the error showing in the credit window.  Put the safe ram chips back in and still nothing.

A couple things.  The connector at the backplane may have a cold solder joint, you would have to remove the backplane to check and or repair.  I question wether your saferam clear chips are good, since it displays with the mains. Do you have a programmer /reader to check the checksums?

Check the backplane board didn't see any lose solder joint.  I don't have a  programmer /reader to check the checksums I don't even know what that means.
Is it something a computer repair shop would have?  I'm thinking I need new saferam clear chips.  what do you think? Mike

Those S6000 "backplane" boards are almost as big as my S+ (MPU) mainboards!

I think it is safe to assume you are not referring to the 100% natural flavenoid rich tea package that is propping up your board on your floral placemats on your (maple or oak?? ) dining room table, and that you are referring to something possibly wrong with your board???  Sorry you made me zoom!! I got curious... Sorry but I can't help at all on Bally stuff, I just wanted to beat bunker to zooming in and seeing something! He spotted some s2000 power supplies in the far off background when I was showing off my new SSS7's machine in the Armada!

On which header does the reel harness plug into on that board?
Check those pins carefully with a lighted magnifying glass if possible.
look for anything even slightly unusual.
If you can, pick up a can of electrical contact cleaner and
give the pins one good spray then turn the board upside down and
let the spray stuff drip off the tips of the pins if you get too much on them.
Do the same for the reel harnesses receptor pins as well.
It really can't hurt as long as you don't completely drown the board with the cleaning stuff.
It dries awfully fast because I think there's some alcohol in it...
just don't try to drink it though...lol

OK I got new saferam clear chips and they worked. Set the time and machine options Played about 3spins and then  reel tilt (42). Cleared out the error and after a few spins it would tilt again. Now I have and other reel Assembly but the bearings in the stepper motor need replacing and I'm trying to find the proper bearings.  So as a shot in the dark I took out the reel Assembly that keeps tilting took off the stepper motor and put it on the reel control unit  that had the stepper that I'm try to find bearings for. and so far no reel tilts. My wife is diligently testing out the machine as I type So far so good. I do have a question/concern what make  the a reel  jiggle/ bounce when when stops  instead of stopping firm like all the other reels?   Mike

You may want to consider a stepper motor assembly or reel assembly, probably wont cost that much and I'm sure Jim at blueridge isn't that far from you.
