Hello,
I am getting code 12 from my machine. I know it means it needs a new battery, but I am having a hard time wanting to pay $25-30 locally for the mini lithium battery. I was wondering what is the reason for such a special cell? Can't I use something better like a larger lithium cell that is easier and cheaper to buy or that is going to give me a longer life?

Here is a pic of my two machines, the one in trouble is the one on the right.

Here is two pics of the offending battery

I can only hope it didn't wipe out my memory on the board.

My hopes is that I could use a a and then use a nice AA lithium battery like an Energizer, Xeno, or Saft which cost a lot less and have more capacity.

Also, will holding down the white reset button for about 10 seconds clear the code 12 when the new battery is in place, or am I going to need a clear chip?

Thanks in advance!!
Tom

Hi Tom,

Happy Thanksgiving and Welcome!  You can use a AA battery provided it's a 3.6v cell and you can find a place to safely mount it.  The 1/2 AA cells in these machines last for years.  I've never needed a clear chip to change one, and since you don't have a bill validator you won't need a set chip either.

Good Luck!

Tom  you can pick up a 3.6 volt battery at Radio Shack for around $18,  Ebay $5, send me a PM with your address and I will send you one for free, kind of like welcome to NLG   If your in a big hurry to play the machine, use (2) AA or AAA battery's solder wires on them to make them hooked up in series, will get you by until you get the right one ( make sure the battery's do not short out the board )  BUZZ

Tilt: Thank you very much! That is music to my ears. I miss playing that machine, and can't wait to see it back in action. I think that I'll do the same for the other machine as well before there is a problem. I am not sure how long it has been this way as it was off for a couple of months due to going crazy with a few projects, so I hope holding the white button and turning the reset key once will clear the issue. Tomorrow when I get the new battery installed I'll report back.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Buzz: Thanks for the most generous offer, however I'd rather like to use a AA sized 3.6v battery so it will make maintaining the machine a much simpler process in the future. Periodically I bring my small air compressor into my office and blow the dust out of both machines along with my arcade machine and double check the grounds and light bulbs.
Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!!
Tom

Here is a shot of my almost complete (however it does run) arcade machine.

After your replace the battery you'll most likely get a 61 error code.  Follow the instructions here http://www.newlifegames.net/spset/gamechange.htm starting at "initializing the new game" to get it back up and running.

These are the parts that I used today, and it was a fast 5 mins fix (got to prep to make sure no loose solder gets into places on the board).

"Batteries Plus" supplied the AA sized 3.6v lithium cell, for $7

"Radio Shack" had the single "AA" Battery Holder Model: 270-401 | Catalog #: 270-401 for $0.99

Everything installed and put back together. The battery holder is held in place with a little hot glue.

The old battery was totally dead, I am very happy that I didn't need to clear out the eproms by buying a clear chip.
Since this worked out so well I picked up a second set to install on the IGT Jackpot Jewels.

Tilt, those directions were spot on!!!

This is a fix that would have cost me $40-60 each at a local shop (as per the phone quote).
So Thanks A Lot Guys!!

I took a picture of the other board (from the Jackpot Jewels machine) to show the install since I had not done so with the previous board.
I figured this would be good in case future readers might be looking to solve the same problem.
Thanks again everyone!

I'd add karma as well, but I do not see a link for it. Maybe I don't have enough posts for that feature to be enabled for me.

Off to look though the other parts of the forum, you are all awesome!

Yup, they are there now, they were not there before. Maybe there is a minimum amount of posts needed in order to give Karma points.

I had some friends over today, and they had a blast with the two slots and my arcade machine. Life is good! Smiley
