There are some VERY nice 10KW Gas/LPG/Natural Gas Gensets available for a decent price these days, complete with autoswitch panel and autostart/cooldown.It's a good investment for places that get snowed in for days.
I too had a 5,500Watt "Contractors Special" when I lived in Californication. It saved my ass more times then I can remember.
I had one of those transfer panels that would switch FOUR important circuits to the genset that was plugged into it.
The BIG problem with the "portable" generators is they have to spin at 3600RPM to make 60 cycle power.3600 is REDLINE for those engines! so they beat themselves to death. Your neighbors will LOVE the noise. The 10KW units run at 1800RPM, much quieter and last a long time. Start and transfer time is usually under 7 seconds.

Had mine since 85 (before the Loma Prieta quake, I lived 7 miles from the epicenter), it's not given me any problems in the time I've owned it. Keep the oil changed every 40 hours or so and don't let the gas sit in it, it'll last forever. Improper storage and lack of maintenance are the real killers, not running at the designed engine speed. It ran for 9 days straight one El Nino year when we were without power (1995?), only being shut down to change the oil. I'd imagine if you bought one nowadays, what you say might hold true. Every one I've seeen now is a pretty big pile of steaming excrement, unlesss you're paying well into 4 figures for it.

My next door neighbor when I lived up there was too far to hear it, my next door neighbor here complained the first time I fired it up.

He started singing a different tune when I offered to plug an extension cord in for him... it's amazing how peoples' attitudes change when you have something they need.  yes

I did the same. When we had power failures I would toss a power cable over the fence to the neighbor. Now that "Noise" was music to his ears....
