Not surprisingly, this machine was sold within minutes for the posted price, $750. It is probably worth $3-4k at a collector's auction.

For those who don't know what they're looking at, it's a 1930s Jennings Century, all original with original paint, reserve jackpot and a mint vendor front. The small knob, lower right, dispensed a roll of mints for every nickel if you bothered to turn it. This meant the operator could describe it as a "vending machine". For good measure, the reel strips also made it a "fortune teller". Neither would hold up against a determined prosecutor but they allowed operation in some gray areas.

I'm posting a pic for when the original disappears.

Thats true now that I think back  I seem to remember a big deal being made over the drinking age in Hawaii. If it was not raised from 18 to 21 then there would be no more federal funding for the roads on Oahu. That was 25 years ago, dont know if the drinking age was ever raised or not.

I see this was the subject of a Supreme Court case, South Dakota v.Dole (1987). Rehnquist, for the majority, upheld the Fed's right to do whatever they damn well please. O'Conner, for the minority, wrote "[E]stablishment of a minimum drinking age is not sufficiently related to interstate highway construction to justify so conditioning funds appropriated for that purpose."

Incidentally..... I note that the Federal drinking law only forbids under-21s from purchasing or publicly possessing alcohol. Not all states made consumption illegal. In Hawaii, under-21s can still legally drink on private premises.

The 28th states that all Federal laws must apply equally to politicians and citizens. I don't see where that's abridged by the Hawaii ruling. Are politicians allowed to publicly possess or purchase alcohol under the age of 18?

oh, and Clinton did a wonderful number on the 4th Amendment all by himself with Echelon/Carnivore (Now DCS1000) and CALEA, not to mention the whole DES encryption thing... althought that last was much more detrimental to commerce than privacy, since citizens just said "Screw you, we'll use non-approved encryption anyway".

I beg your pardon - I meant the 21st Amendment. The second clause has been interpreted as giving states essentially absolute power to regulate the sale and consumption of alcohol.

  You're correct, it is the 21st. But, Hawaii did have (and still does have) the right to regulate alcohol in any manner they see fit, in following with the 21st Amendment as any other state does. What can and does happen is that the federal government withholds some of the federal funding for the interstate highway system if the state doesn't agree to follow the federal guidelines.

Cruisepl, failing to follow the federal guidelines for underage drinking would not lead to "no more federal funding for roads on Oahu", the Feds don't have that much power. It would result in a small decrease in the amount they were given for funding interstate highways, I believe the amount is either 5 or 10%.

Funny thing about the Cole verdict, it was a 7-2 verdict by the SC, so it's not like it was a strict party line vote that can be put at the feet of either political party. There were 3 conservatives, 3 liberals, and one moderate who voted for it, as well as Rehnquist, who, though a conservative , was a strong promoter of States' rights to govern without federal interference. As for the disssenting side, it was made up of one liberal and one conservative.

I always thought O'Connor's dissent was fallacious in one point that she stated "It is over-inclusive because it stops teenagers from drinking even when they are not about to drive on interstate highways." That is incorrect, as you stated, Op, because teenagers are not stopped from drinking by federal law, merely purchasing or drinking in public. In states where private consumption and possession is allowed (like California), teens can still drink in private. Any prevention of them drinking in private is due to state law, not federal.

I haven't thought much about the NMDA or SD vs. Cole since college, when I actually debated it. Never thought I'd ever use that knowledge again.

$550 for that is not a deal, particularly since it's some kind of hybrid in a most unusual case with a non-Bally progressive stuck on top. Even the handle is wrong. I wouldn't touch it.

First is a Hilton Space Quest Igt slant top 5x pay. Doesn't look like a Space Quest candle, but really can't see it.
Second is an unusual Bally's with one huge top payglass.

I have a candle for it. Course I paid $20 bucks for it last year.  Nice looking machine though.  And it's a 5 coin, gonna be much funner to play than a 2 or 3 coin.

i have sold several of similar machines - common name is Mississippi Gambler - not sure where that name came from - the machine is basically a 4 reel low boy with a large marquis and feature unit box.  I guess is was a poor man (casinos) substitute for a BIG BERTHA.

I recall seeing machines like this on endcaps in high traffic areas back in the '80s. They usually had terrible payback percentages.
