Newest addition to the family, RIP Bentley

« on: March 24, 2010, 08:19:58 PM »

I wanna share this one with the group.
This one bit me in the ass bigtime!!!
On the upright 550 it has a cover over the logic box. Said cover activates a push-switch. No big deal..read on....
So I say to myself, why bother with this annoying door! simply put a piece of tape over the switch and set aside the piece of scrapmetal.
Well....got news for ya!
It seems the 550 logic is rather "smart" and KNOWS the switch wasnt tripped. It then starts to act bitchy.First off it WONT RUN!
It might "clear" but it acts strange! after I went thru 3 boards not booting including the one that I KNEW worked I got wondering.
First thing, I blamed the 24C04 EEPROM on the backplane...WRONG!
Seems "Bypassing" the logicdoor switch is a "kiss of death". DO NOT DO THIS!
While it doesnt damage anything, the throwing of the machine across the room WILL do severe damage to it and the tile floor (no,I didnt kill it).
So put up with the stupid door,it will save sheet metal, tile floors and a lot of hair.....

Kirk
I do the exact same thing with my 550 converted to a cpu/nxt and the only problem so far is when the tape slips off the machine gives a call attendent error,  I sure hope I'm not messing anything up

Darn Kirk, sounds like a little bad luck.  Had a 1.5+ and a NXT conversion board in a 550 and just have the wires off the switch (open) and no problems.
Do you have the main door switch wired and working ?

Ron, sounds like your 550 is on its last leg. You can give it to me at the show before it really screws up!  bust gut laughing

Hi Kirk,

Funny enough when I read through the forums looking for a problem on one of my WMS 550 machines, I came across yours. I tried switching the machine off, opened the cage and started the machine and found that if the MPU door stays closed and the machine is switched off and back on it seems to reboot itself over and over. When I opened the door and started it, it started fine. i am definitely going to want to fix this, so if you managed to get your solved, would you mind sharing? I will investigate further on my part.

Thanks

Has anyone had a solution to this problem yet? I have 2 WMS 550 machines doing the same thing. I have replaces all boards and was wondering if it could be the memory module?

If you have replaced all boards, the memory is not an issue as the memory is on the 1.5 board.  Have you tried swithing out the power supplies?

Hi All,

I have found that 2 Caps on The PSU caused the problem.

Thanks
