I have a few questions for you.

1.   Was your machine working properly before the clear?
2.   Is the battery on the MPU board in good shape (>3.0v, but hopefully closer to 3.6 or 3.7)?
3.   Does your machine require clear chips to do a RAM clear, or did you just have to move the jumper?
3a.  If you used chips, are you certain that you put the original chips back correctly with the notches in the right direction?

  Sorry I did not write sooner but most of our state ended up in emergency fllood zone this week. Anyway, this slot machine was working perfectly until I put a dollar bill in. It immediately got jammed. Proceeded to take "bill box" out and the rest was down-hill. Did test the battery, it is fine. Did take the chips out and maybe at one time I think I could have put one in backwards. Rechecked today and all are in correctly. All lights on machine are flashing , both red and green over coin slot. The number 80 is lit in credit window. Hope this machine doesn't suddenly become a paper weight.

Don't worry, you don't have a large paperweight! 

I can't be sure, but I think that you may have damaged one of the chips when you installed it incorrectly, IF you powered it up with the chip in wrong. It's also possible that you bent a pin when you reinstalled them. Here is the official description of the error from the manual. The flashing lights that you describe are normal for this error.

80*   ROM Checksum Error.      The checksum of the Main program (U12, U15, U3, U4) or the Personality (U20, U18) does not match the expected checksum.



You should check carefully to be sure that none of the pins got bent under the chips during installation. Pull both of the Mains chips that you removed for the clear (U12 and U15) and reinstall them. Make certain that the notch on the chips is pointed in the right direction, that the pins are aligned correctly, and that the chips are well seated. <ADD> The notches on the chips should be facing the back of the board and all eight chips in those two rows should have their notches pointing in the same direction.

If they are in correctly and you still have the error, you may want to give one of our vendors a call and get a set of replacement Mains. I would also try another FULL SafeRam clear first.

What version of Mains are on your board? If you don't know, post back with the numbers on the sticker of the chip in either U12 or U15.

I just had another thought. Could you have put the two chips back in the wrong locations?

There are four mains. They should be numbered 0 to 3. For example, a '95 Mains chip would have a number that looks like this:  ME920000-C-0
The number is red is the number of the chip. C-0 should be in U15, and C-1 should be in U12.

Check the pins on the main board connector.  I'm pretty sure this is a reel slot and not a video slot, should be moved to bally reel games.

RIHARLEY, is this a video slot or a reel slot?
Have you fixed your machine yet?

Video codes usually just say what the error is.  Reel slots show errors in the "display", "credit window".   Must be a reel slot....

Hello Karma560 & A69mapor ( NICE CAR)
This is a BALLY 5500 CRAZY JOKER reel slot MACHINE . I have done a FULL SafeRam clear, checked and replaced the chips, with no luck; code 80 in win display and all lights flashing.
The origanal chips are # U15 10-28-99 ME950000-G-0 & U12 10-28-99  ME950000-G-1. Again it all started when I inserted a dollar bill that got hung up in the box. After that it just shut down.

Code 80 refers to mains, supplements or personality chips.  I would also check for bent pins at the rear connectors of the main board.

I checked the mpu pins, they look good. I had the U12 chip in wrong; I did another FULL SafeRam clear, still code 80.

Did you buy a new set of Mains from one of our vendors, or did you put the same chips as before back into the board?

If you put in the same chips, it's time to order a new set.
If you bought new chips and then put the chip in backwards again, you many need to purchase a third set.

OK! It sounds like new chips to me! The chips read U12  10-28-99 - ME950000-G-1  &  U15 10-28-99 - 950000-G-0.                  The mpu reads AS 3356-201  REV. C. Do you have chips for this machine,or know where L can order them?                            Thanks Walter

If a vendor doesn't pop in here soon, put a request in the classified section.

Personally, I would go with a set of '95 Mains instead (920000 series), unless Wayne or another member can explain what the newer Mains have over the older ones that I don't know about.

If you get the older mains, you will not need the clear chips to perform a clear. (You won't have to remove any chips at all.)
Doing a clear with the '95 Mains only requires moving a single jumper (JW10) in the front (lower) right corner of the board. It's much easier, and since Ballys eat batteries faster than Bugs Bunny eats carrots, you'll be doing lots of clears over the next few years.


Remember, don't get confused. The '95 (1995) Mains are labeled 920000. Your 950000 series is newer.

That would be a +.  With the 95mains I would need to replace just the two chips,or more?

It's four chips, not two. You should have four chips labeled 950000 now: ...-0 through ...-3
I'm not sure if any other chips need to be changed, but I don't believe so.
