Hi!
I just bought a non working Bally 5000+ and now I'm gonna figure out what is wrong.
This is my first slot machine so I'm totally new with these machines but I own few jukeboxes and pinballs which I have already fixed.

Anyway, when I drive a test 6, 1st and 3rd reel spins jerky or just jerks and not spinning at all. 2nd reel seems to be fine.
I can start a new game but only 2nd reel spins.
It gives me an error code 40, sometimes error code 47

I have already cleared safe ram many times, replaced U14 in reel control board (I was trying to fix 1st reel first because it seems to be same problem in 3rd reel), measured all diodes, resistors and transistors (no one seems to be broken) in reel control board.

Anyone have an idea what is wrong? Or at least is the problem in reel control board, I/O board or MPU board?

P.S. I can post a video to youtube if that helps

Hi and welcome to NLG!
I guess you know that when the Bally slot is cleared the reels "jiggle" and "Vibrate" for a while until the first coin is played. This is part of the reels "tuning" process and calibration. If this is not the case, look up a69mopar, he is the Bally man.

Thanks for your reply but I don't think that's the case.
I also uploaded the video, you can watch it here:

Oh my god!  rotflmao You looked like you were AFRAID to drop that coin into the slot!!!! LOL

Anyways, The middle reel is fine.....I'd check the harnesses going into the 1st and 3rd reels...
Unplugging them and re-seating the connectors might help ya! yes
There could possibly be a bent pin in them?

Looks like bad reels.  Try swapping the reels from 2 to 3, to 1 etc and see if the issue follows the reels (I'd bet).

Did I mention that I hate the s5000 slot...

Thanks,
Wayne

I checked the connectors, nothing wrong in there.
I also switched the reels but the issue didn't follow so reels should be fine.

Does anyone have  BALLY SYSTEMS 5000 TRAINING & TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL in pdf?
Someone is selling hardcopy in eBay but ships it only to US.

All the TRAINING & TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL is going to tell you
is to replace the MPU board or harnesses.
It won't help you at all really.
They do not go into depth as far as troubleshooting
which IC component is fried or gone beyond values.
Instead, it will tell you to swap parts with known good parts
to try and single out the problem.
Do you have spare parts such as known good MPU boards or chips?
Try swapping those first.
Did you switch the reel harness around
to see if the middle harness follows to either #1 or #3?

Unfortunately I don't have any spare parts
And I don't know here to buy those, so far I haven't found any, except MPU board in eBay but again, shipping is only to US  Duh!

I have switched the reel harness but only working reel is the reel which is connected to the middle reel connectors.
So I can be pretty sure that problem is in some of those boards, not in reels itself.

Physically switching the reel harness from one reel to another
should have moved the problem with the harness.
But because you said you've tried this, the harness is okay,
and so is the MPU board - the problem lies with either bad/dirty
reel optics which can be cleaned out with compressed air or a damp Q-tip.
Don't use any alcohol-based products.

Remove the 2 outside reels from the machine.
What you need to check is to see if the pins are in full contact
on the reel boards on the two outside reels.
I believe your middle reel is okay.
If the exact reel behavior still exists after cleaning and re-installing -
then I suggest that you shop around for a new set of reels.
The boards might be shot.

Before you shop around for new reels - try a full ram clear.
Maybe that will clear out corrupted reel errors?

I agree with you Blueridge...he pointed out that the problem doesn't follow the harness.

So far I have done following:
Reel control board:
- Replaced U11, U14 and CR12
- Desoldered all connector pins
- Desoldered many bad joints

I/O board, MPU board and Mother board
- Desoldered many bad joints

I have also replaced flat cable between I/O and Reel control board

None of these fixes has no effect at all.

When I start a new game and pull the handle, there's little jiggle in reels 1 & 3.
I measured voltages (against the frame) from reel motor connectors, in reels 1 & 3 there's always 1.2V in brown wire.
In reel 2, there's 6.8V in brown wire when the reel is spinning but after indexing there's 1.2V!
So I think that reels 1 & 3 is indexing immediately after I pull the handle. What could cause this? MPU board?

I just received another reel control board, changed it but same old problem is still there  bawling
So, what should I suspect next, I/O board or MPU board?

I would suspect the MPU.

Hi I am a new member and just came across this thread. Did you get the problem fixed Styleline? I have the same issue except it is my 3rd reel that works, reels 1 & 2 dont spin they just jerk. I know it is not the reels or the wire harness because I have interchanged them with the same result ( only reel 3 spins ). I also just bought this game from a person that said it worked great and then they put it in storage for a year and half and when they turned it back on it did not work.

Unfortunately I haven't yet but I bet the problem is acid damage in MPU board.
Makes also sense to your machine, in storage the battery could have leaked and ruined your MPU board.

I dont see any signs of battery leakage. Battery is also still good ( by that I mean it still has correct voltage ). Skyline, like your slot mine also has the same voltage problem on the brown wire, the reel that works has 6.7 volts and the reels that dont work have 1.2 volts. I used a jumper wire from the brown wire of the good reel and jumped it to one of the non working reels just to see what would happen and the jumper wire did spin the non working reel. I think there is just a voltage problem somewhere, although all the voltage wires going to the reel board are the correct voltage. It does seem to me to be a reel board issue but you said Skyline that you have replaced that board and it was the same problem. I think I will start shopping for a reel board myself and replace mine to see if there are any changes.

Ok, good to know it's not acid damage then.
I also tried jumper wire in brown wires but both reels stopped working. If I disconnect red connector and measure brown wire's voltage, there's only 0,4V in brown wire's pin and in the connector. Same voltages in working reel. So I don't think it's voltage problem.
Anybody knows what that brown wire is used for?

Yes, I have replaced the reel control board and I/O board but nothing has changed.
I have also checked mother board twice, there was one broken trace (acid damage) but that only fixed the hopper (payout now works, or at least payout test works) .
So, it seems to me that it must be MPU board, there's no other boards left.

But, good luck with your fixing and let us know is you make any progress.
