Couple of moths ago Capt Happy was here and we were messing around with some S 2000s I had just bought. Couple of machines the light behind the .25 cent ledgen didn't work. So I installed a 12 volt LED, SMOKED the display board. Figured this was just something kind of afreak thing so I did the same thing to the machine next to that one with the same results, smoked another board. Mark did get the traces repaired on one of them. Last week I sold a guy some LEDs and told him this story, he went home and smoked his display. Why this happened I don't know, did I install the LED bulbs with reveres polarty I'm not sure. The only thing I am sure of is the bulbs are good, they work just fine in the buttons on a Game King. Well I guess I'm sure of one other thing, I will never install another LED for a ledgen light in a S 2000, you can if you want to!!!

After I toasted my second VAC doing the same thing  ----------> new office policy....no more LED's in denom insert area...period.  There is no logic as to why it happens that I can find.

The Happ LED is nice.  I bought one and it looks great, but it is expensive like you pointed out.  I put these from MCM Electronics in the rest of my S2000's.  They look good too, and I've never had a problem with them.

I don't own an S2000. Seems strange that IGT would tap there Denomination Lamp power from the Display board. Clearly The LED's draw more current than the board traces can handle.
Just out of curiosity, is the Denomination power supply AC or DC?

Yeah, even the MCM LEDs are over 6 bucks a piece now. If I was lucky enough to have, and had enough room for 35 S2000's I'd be admiring those incandescent lamps too  Tongue Out

Commtech they're 12v DC.

Has anyone tried the LEDs from the pinball site that I posted in the other thread. They're selling LEDs for 35¢, that's thirty-five CENTS. There's shipping, of course. I believe that it was Bunker who first posted about that site last year or some months back, and they seem to have LEDs designed for extra dispersion -- some as much as 180°.

It would be cool to hear from someone who has tried them and could tell us if they were any good for our purpose. It's clear that most of their bulbs would not be, but some look promising.

The reason that you smoked the board is probably because you used the incorrect LED. A simple 12V will not cut it. I noticed that there are two different types. The kind you would install in the buttons (for lets say a double row button deck) and the kind you would install for the denom or 5-light super stepper assembly. What's the difference? Look at the wires on the bottom of the LED and you will notice that the wires either wrap around the base completely or just one on each side. I believe the LED's with the wrap around style are hitting both the + and - at the same time and bad things happen. The ones that have the one wire on each side are the ones used for the denom. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I have attached a picture to show the difference. Hope this helps.

They have those same wedge T-1 bulbs with a "raspberry" shaped globe over the LED to
really disperse the white light correctly so that it illuminates the denomination area nicely!  yes

However, I've lost the link to it though! Arghhh! Duh!
When I find a reciept for it, I'll post back here...

It is more about the bulb holder than the bulb, while most automotive LED's are wrapped around both sides of the body, many electronic ones are not (single side contact) pictures should explain it, the problem that it appears some have been having is the type of holder being used with the new LED, the ones that IGT put in the deck buttons from the factory are double contact (wrap around) and fine as button bulbs, but would cause the short in the denom, while the cheaper aftermarket electronic use bulbs are single contact and wouldn't cause the problem, best I could do on the pics as I can't hold camera still

wrap around wires would short on this holder (the one many IGT's have) arrows indicate the way the bulb base would be inserted

Some older S2K's and the early Stepper Line Light Box tend to have these, either bulb would be OK in these

These are actual bulbs from factory IGT Dual Row button decks, easy way to tell is the plastic diffuser on the bulb side, these would cause a smoke if used in the black bulb holder pictured in above post
