How to kill your 8 liner...(Cherry master)

Just a bit of history  
I started with "cherry masters'",also known as "8 liner". That was all I played until I found slots . As most of you know,I have a few slots now...And ignored my 8 liners over the years. I would just keep the lateset C.M board in the cabinets,and store the rest
"Taco" called one day for help on the settings on a board...something "96" (all of the 96's are the same). So I dig through my boards looking for it,and decide to tag all of the boards with the names. Which you can not tell by looking. So,I plug each in to see what they were . ...
And now,the purpose of this post.
I trashed five boards due to leakage of the battery.
I had Cherry 91,95,etc. Which are fun games to play. But,with acid damage on the board,its trash. Oh,don't get me wrong,you can repair them...but do not let them get this bad.

I'm not upset that the batteries leaked and ruined the boards. I'm upset that I KNEW better and let it happened.

Unfortunately it's a common scenario. I see a lot at the arcade auctions with the same issues.

You should replace the NiCD batteries with newer ones or just leave them off the board. The Varta NiMH batteries in the same shape work well.

OR...

You can take a page from the Arcade collectors and disable the charging circuit then use some 3v lithium batteries.

LOL,yes,it is common. And we know the results of when we ignore it   . I usually try to help in the CM section,and figured if I was stupid enough to do it... I may help some one else that does not know better

Oh,and when I was helping  "taco",first thing I asked him was for a picture of his board with no connections. Cause I knew that the batteries would leak,and ruin the board . However, I did the same

when I was in trade school growing up . I had A professor that had two famous lines he said to the class daily ..
this guy was past the year of retirement when I had him in classes ..

his first favorite line concerning humans --related to batteries >>>was  quote batteries are like people little buddies---- if sit they die !!& people die sitting !!

the second famous quote from the professor was ------if you were caught looking at the clock on wall during class time

Here's a thread I started on the Neo-Geo forums about batteries.

On most of the Neo-Geo systems there are NiCd batteries (some of the newer used rechargeable lithium coin cells) that keep save game and clock/calendar information along with soft dip switch settings for each game. On that platform they used a blocking diode and a 470 ohm current limiting charge resistor. The diode blocked current flow when the +5v was on and the 470 ohm resistor limited the charge current to the battery. Remove the resistor, leave the diode, and replace that battery with a lithium coin cell and socket.

Or, do what I do and replace the battery with a new NiMH one.
