Most of the major distributors want $5 plus for a single cap of this size. Does anyone know of a good surplus place that may have them cheaper?

If you have a tv repair shop near by, stop and see them. Or swipe one of an old computer cpu, capes rarely go bad by themselves. It's often another componant causing it. You might consider a 25, 35 or 50v replacement on the off chance that the 16 was underated for the circuit. Higher voltage replacement won't hurt anything

Understandable, but the higher voltage ones are even more expensive.

When we get a board in to the shop for repair and it has the original capacitors in it from when it was first made we do a "cap" job on the board.

You wouldn't believe the problems a dry capacitor will cause, and I have ran into quite a few.

Most common are those 2.2uF caps on the Bally 2000 boards. I have seen the one on the power supply shoot so much noise into the 5V line
that the whole machine goes ape sh*t.

Same with the one on the I/O board in the Bally 2000.

The Fortune I board experiences the same noise and ripple problems with a (original mfg.) dry 6800uF cap, which filters the 5V power supply for the entire board.

The last reasonably priced 6800uF caps we were able to find came from All Electronics for under $2 each but they sold out of those years ago.
Plus they were as big around as a gorilla t*rd and hard to fit on the board.

Mouser has them (smaller modern sized ones) for around $4.50 each in quantities.

Jameco Electronics had some for a while but discontinued them.

I just leave them in the board and replace the other caps now.
