Topic moved to Bally Reel Games.

Staz, Bally 5500 (and I'm pretty sure 6000) reel strips have notches. As has been posted before, they have two sets. The notches closer to the end (bottom) of the strip are for upright machines and the second set of notches are for slant top machines.
<CORRECTION> The notches closer to the end (bottom) of the strip are for slant top machines and the second set of notches are for upright machines.

(Unless you bought a Bally EM machine. If you did and I messed up, let me know and I'll move the thread back.) yes

<ADD> It occurs to me that it's possible that you have strips made for a non-Bally clone game or copied strips. If they're not originals and weren't well made, that could explain why you have no notches.

Staz,

I am not familiar with the Bally Reel Strips, but I am assuming that your strips do have notches in them??? Let us know. Also I assume that you are actually having trouble finding the area of the actual reel basket that has a "tab" in it to match up to a notch in the reel strip?? Let us know, and maybe post a picture...

If the Bally reels are like IGT reels with a tab, then I suggest getting a toothpick and gently holding the point of it in the channel where the reel strip sits in the reel basket and slowly rotate the reel until you feel what should be the location tab.

I hope this helps, be sure to reply back and let us know if this is correct and works for you.

Okay. First off, I made a mistake regarding the use of the tabs, so I apologize (see my correction above).

Now to the question at hand.

The tab is located on the left side of the reel basket only. There IS a mark on the outside edge of the basket, but its placement is weird. It is a raised arrow (or triangle). However, it is 180° away from the notch! Go figure. Duh!

If you want to use it, then run your finger along the outer left rim of the reel basket as you turn it until you find it, and then turn the reel another 1/2 turn. It would probably be easier to just look for the notch on the inside. It IS visible. Just remember to look at the left side only.

Then use the second notch on the strips, not the first (my bad Spank).

Scratch Head  Not on either of mine. Scratch Head Both are using the second notch. Scratch Head 2 I changed my answer after I checked my machines.

I know we went over this at your house the last time that Staz asked, which is why I answered the way I did at first, but mine aren't following the rule. You've worked on dozens of machines though -- if they are different, then the answer might not be cut and dried. Scratch Head 2

Buzz, I just triple checked with a flashlight, and the strips on both of my 5500 uprights (one four reel and one three reel) are set with the basket tab in the second notch from the bottom on the left. All of the remaining three reel notches have empty space.

Now that I think about it, it makes sense, since shifting the strips from the second notch to the first would take the symbol at the horizontal line (front and center on an upright) and move it up and towards the top, which is closer to where it would need to be on a slant top if the basket were left in the same position.

I was really worried that you were going to check and tell me that most or all of your machines were set the other way since you've worked on them so much more than I have.

I thought that maybe mine were oddballs, since I do have a four reeler and a custom three reeler (although the custom kit is made by Bally and did come from the factory that way).

It's good to know that they are all consistent.  yes

i succesfully swapped 2 of my 3 reels, it was the second notch that you have to line up on the strips..... my 3d reel kept spinning i think there was sutten wrong with it ... i put it in and all it does is spin i got some kind of error code 9.1 so i used the original reel and it works fine but i still didnt solve the problem of the huming noise coming out of the reels when they spin....

Bally machines marry to the reels.  Sometimes they swap ok, but they usually time out while trying to initialize.  One or more reels will continue to spin.  Performing a partial saferam clear will correct this while retaining your settings.
91 is a communication error, you likely have another error that starts with a 4.
