Greetings.

While I've been here for a while and like tinkering, this S2000 stuff is brand new to me, so please bear with me.

I picked up three S2000 machines last week.  I haven't even powered the third one on yet.  Of the first two (a 9" "White Stars" and a RT "Big Times Pay"), both have speaker issues.  I've done a lot of reading here already and have an idea of what I need to do next (identify the processor board, and then possibly add resistors).  Both only have one upper speaker working (the White Stars has a noticeable "whump, whump, whump" during the reel spin), and the Big Times Pay has a broken connector for the coin tray speaker, so I have a total of 1 of 3 speakers working on that game.

On the Big Times Pay game, none of the LEDs around the 4th reel work in either the "bonus reel test" or in actual gameplay when a bonus is triggered.  In addition, there are no sounds when the bonus is hit or while the wheel is spinning.  I do get reel stop sounds and "symbol hit" sounds in the main game, and I do get a credit rollup melody after the bonus, but a whole lot of nothing when the bonus reel is waiting to be spun, and while it's spinning.  From videos I've seen online, there should be a voice that prompts you to press the spin button, sound as the reel slows to a stop, and perhaps other speech as well (based on the video below).

I'm guessing/hoping that it's related to the LEDs not working, and thinking perhaps I might have a wrong chip installed on the board?  Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to do to get the LEDs and sounds working for the bonus reel?  I bought the machine used and "as-is" from a seller that I'd rather not deal with, so going back to the point of purchase isn't really an option (and I got a good price, so I can't complain).

Thanks so much in advance for any help you folks can offer.

Here's a YouTube video showing what the machine should be doing (this is NOT my machine) -- imagine total silence (and no LEDs around the 4th reel) once the third main symbol has landed, and that's what my machine is doing.

I will look tonight and report back.  Thanks for the reply -- I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with these machines -- I'm happy to have  nlg covering my back!

...Here's a YouTube video showing what the machine should be doing ...

bust gut laughing bust gut laughing bust gut laughing

I apologize for posting off topic, but I had to laugh. I'll bet that a lot of BTP owners would agree that the video shows what the machine SHOULD be doing -- hitting two Big Times Pay symbols with anything  knockout (although the multiplier fizzled out). Tongue Out  That's sure not what it usually  does. Crazy frying pan frying pan

I now return you to the good hands of CH CaptainHappy

The LED ring on no times pay and all the other 4th reel bonus games is ran by a really thin wiring harness, almost like the ones for the pay line light boxes, it goes from the backlight controller to the back of the LED right.. if you're looking at the back of the reel it'll plug into the left hand side somewhere.. my pictures are escaping me right now.

The Dazzle Ring lights don't go to the backlit controller, they daisy chain to the motherboard (remember Brian?)

Kevin, I don't know how much help I'd be, because my RWB BG appears to be a bit different.  My game doesn't stop and require user intervention when BTP symbols fall on the line.  Mine just automatically spins the 4th reel and the lights start spinning.  Do your lights do anything in demo/idle mode either?  Mine do.  We probably have different sound chips as well.

Okay, I'm home and was able to pull the board.

What are the chip and SIMM numbers on your software?

The stepper base chip in U21 is SB100231

The GME1 and 2 chips in U19 and U46 are SG000363 (1 of 2 and 2 of 2, respectively)

The version chip in U44 is VS011GX1

The sound SIMM in the multimedia lite board is DSV00042.  No dip switches on the SIMM (I mention that only because the third machine also has a 42 in it, but there are dip switches on the SIMM at R9-R12 -- no idea what they're for).

The good news on the board is that it's a 504 rev B board (in fact, I just checked, all three are the 504 rev B), so my sound issues should hopefully be fixable.  I'm a little disturbed that I only have one upper speaker working right now, but hopefully I'll find a loose connection or something to the other speaker when it comes time to fix that problem.

Do my chips sound right?  I think it's set to "STEREO" in the settings (I don't remember what the other options, if any, were -- is that the correct setting?).

Do your lights do anything in demo/idle mode either?

I imagine that they're supposed to, but I have not seen them lit up since I got the machine.

Thanks, Mark -- I'll have to get a hold of him.

UPDATE

Well, some good news/"?" news:

Thanks and K+ to Jim from Blueridge in another thread for showing clearly how to remove the bonus reel, I pulled it out and followed the wires on the right side harness into the machine.  The harness that plugs into the right side of the bonus reel turns into two 12-pin molex connectors (one male, one female), and... they're just hanging underneath the reel shelf, not plugged into anywhere.

I didn't see anywhere obvious on the motherboard that these would plug into, but I didn't really know where to look, either.  Jim (Blueridge) mentioned that they're supposed to be daisy chained through the motherboard -- is there something I should be unplugging from the motherboard, and then plugging into one of the two 12-pin connectors coming to/from the bonus reel?

While this doesn't solve the lack of speech/audio (unless it needs the bonus reel for that?), this gives me good hope for a resolution to the light ring issue.

Knagl,
Swap the 2-pin connectors on the sound card coming from
the left/right speakers in the topbox to verify if the problem follows the speakers.
Sounds like a broken speaker wire really.
Your chips and DSV sound they're correct for your game.
The DSV00042 is a generic sound card...basic sounds.

Leave all the dips on the DSV sound cards onto the "OFF" positions.
Don't mess with DSV dips as Blueridge once pointed out -
they're for flashing the DSV cards the first time with the correct sound bytes.

Your version chip (VS011GX1) allows for a future multi-denomination machine.
I've attached a PSR for your SG000363 GME 1&2 chips>>>

Mark-

I unplugged each speaker at the little two-pin connector that comes out from each speaker.  I plugged the right speaker lead into the left speaker, and the left speaker then worked fine (and the right speaker did not).  When I swapped them again, the right speaker worked fine and the left did not.  Is there somewhere deeper in the machine I should be tracing wiring back to?

One thing I noticed, on the speaker that isn't working, as soon as I plugged in the connection, I could hear soft static.  If I spun with only the "bad" speaker connected and put my ear right up to the speaker, I could ever so faintly hear the spin sounds.  I don't know if that is just audio leaking through from somewhere, or if that's indicitive of a bad sound SIMM, bad multimedia lite board, bad MPU board, or what -- I'm still brand new to these things and don't know where to go next to troubleshoot the bad upper speaker.  I also don't know for sure if the lower speaker is working correctly, due to the previously mentioned mashed speaker connector.

Aah, good to know -- thanks (and K+) for that.

Awesome.  All three machines actually have functioning "Change Credit Value" denomination selection buttons (well, I presume the third machine is working).  Thanks for the PSR!   applause

Mark beat me to it, as I was going to say that the DSV00042 is a generic sound SIMM, and I think that you will want to look for DSV00051 for Big Times Pay for the specific sounds like you saw in the video. You got the PSR now, and I am going to send you an email with another treat.
 Mail

Does your machine have an audio amp board in it? I have seen those go bad and effect the sound. I have attached a picture of an example of one... There are a few versions, and I do not recall the specific machine this picture was from.

Yes, there's an amplifier in the top box that looks similar to that.  I'll look at my now working S2000 next to the Big Times Pay and see if it uses the same amp.  If it does, I'll swap them out when I get a chance and report back with the results of the swap.  Thanks for the e-mail treat!  Smiley

Okay, so we've made some good progress!  At this point I need to:

- Try swapping amps to see if that makes any difference (hopefully it will -- I like simple fixes)
- Get the correct sound SIMM (DSV00051)
- Now I just need to figure out where that 4th reel harness plugs into, as it's just flapping in the breeze in my cabinet.  Can anyone with a Big Times Pay help me with that info?

Thanks and K+ to everyone that's chimed in -- you're all proof that this is the best site on the web for home slot machine ownership info.

I have all the DSV 51's you need in stock, on the Dazzle wires, turn off game, on the motherboard (backplane) in the middle and up top near the metal cage you will see a few marked netplex with same pin size as the harness you have to the reel, unplug one from the motherboard and plug into the female end of the dazzle harness and plug the male end of the dazzle harness into the motherboard where you removed the other plug (daisy chain) it will pick up the board when you boot, pics and plug location in a day or so if needed

Excellent.  No pics needed (yet) -- I saw the Netplex markings on the motherboard, but I wasn't sure if the dazzle lights were a Netplex device or not.  Will work on it tomorrow and let you know the (good, I'm sure) news.  I'm also going to swap audio amplifiers to see if my sound problem is there, and then get with you for an order for the SIMM card and perhaps an audio amp if that's my sound issue.  Thanks for the help!   applause applause applause

Kevin, when you get your DSV00051 SIMM (which is what I have on mine), I'll be curious to see if our sound options differ.  I took a look at Bunker's attachment (thanks btw Mark...very helpful) and I went into 4.4.2 MMLB Sound and in that menu there are a boat load of sounds that you can run through...kinda cool.  This must be the area where all Big Times versions of sound wav files are pulled from the SIMM.

When I went back into the 3.2.6 Multimedia section, I don't have the following: (which REALLY sucks because I like the (Generic - universal  stereo melody) as played in 4.4.2 MMLB Sound!!!!)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.2.6.4 Reel Spin Option: This submenu determines the sound made while
the reels spin. Some paytables may restrict the options to Enhanced Only,
Generic and Enhanced, or S-Plus Legacy only.
• Generic (universal stereo melody)
• Enhanced (one or more enhanced stereo melodies)
• S-Plus Legacy (S-Plus random notes)
NOTE: To play the S-Plus Legacy reel spin sounds and to view the Legacy sound
options, the appropriate DSVxxxxx must be installed on the multimedia lite board.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also don't have a 3.2.5 Roll Up sounds section either.

Just out of curiosity to the masses, would a newer version game board or performing a clear chip procedure unlock any of these options or is it a matter of certain game limitations?

Jason,

I ran into that issue about sounds and it is very dependent upon the Base chip for your game, not your actual board or clear chipping. bawling

Where I ran into this was a five reel Triple Butterfly sevens 180 coin machine. I found that playing a clone of that game that was a 90 coin machine there were many more melodies played during reel spin. I changed the Base chip on my machine to the 90 credit version and set it up and was pleased to see the option for more melodies!!! yes I was happy then! propeller yes propeller

Try swapping the MM Lite boards first with the working game to make sure they don't have a channel out, and remove the lower tray plug from the metal bracket if the plastic housing is smashed and not mating with the upper tray plug, if those wires are touching you will have sound problems as well, and DSV 42 is correct for the White Stars

I changed the Base chip on my machine to the 90 credit version and set it up and was pleased to see the option for more melodies!!! yes I was happy then! propeller yes propeller

Strange...I looked at Bunker's sheet again, and I don't even see my game listed in there (Big Times Red White & Blue)...perhaps it's a red headed step child.  Sad

The Stepper Game per my chips is SG000363 and the Stepper Base is SB100879.  How could I find out if there are other base chips available?

I'm sorry Kevin, I'm not hijacking your thread.  I'll shut up now.  Wink

Found out that there is also SB100880 stepper base chip (for New Jersey jurisdiction it appears).  It would probably produce the same sound option results I assume?

Try swapping the MM Lite boards first with the working game to make sure they don't have a channel out, and remove the lower tray plug from the metal bracket if the plastic housing is smashed and not mating with the upper tray plug, if those wires are touching you will have sound problems as well

Will do, and I'll report back when I'm able to do that.  Thanks again for the suggestions.
