Using PSP with Windows 7

As my luck would have it my laptop and my basement PC with XP, both crashed.   I purchased a new laptop and of course it has Windows 7.  Now it
will not read my PSP manual software.   Will I have to go back to XP to use it? Don't want to purchase a new PC for my basement until I find out.

Hi Ron,

I can't answer the windows 7 question(don't have it)are you trying to read just the pdf manual
or use the psp software ?
Sounds kinda funny the 2 would crash what happen ?
what are they not doing.

Hey Tim, trying to use the PSP software.

My laptop screen went black and would not start up. The basement PC would only run the fan wide open and would not start or show anything on the screen. Gave them to my buddy that works on PC for parts.

OH....I was hoping we could get 1 of the 2 machines running again
sorry I can't help with windows 7 for psp.

I could never get psp to even work on vista.
XP or 98 is all I use for psp I'm sure you can pick something up cheap
if that's all you need it for.

Just another thought most new pc's today don't even have a serial port
and those serial to usb adapters never work when using older software like this.

Interesting when I was shopping for a new lappy
and was willing and wanting to try windows 7, I couldn't find one with a serial port.

I then gave up because after pricing it loaded up with ram and such
it was more then I wanted to spend not to mention I didn't even need to buy one..LOL

Ok so back to original topic...Does psp work on windows 7.....Anybody ????

I would try and right click the psp executable file, then properties, then compatibility tab. check compatibility mode for XP and also run it as administator.

Ron, in re-reading your posts, you also say the PSP manual. Do you have Adobe Reader on the new laptop? My upper instructions were to run the PSP program if you were having trouble with that.

I am pretty sure that the 15 pin port is actually an external VGA monitor connection.... The serail ports were done in 9pin and 25pin versions.

Check Craigslist or eBay for a cheap laptop -- you really only need one that's barely functional and has a serial port.  Win 95 or 98 would be a bonus, but it only needs to run DOS to support PSP.  Of course, you may want Windows on there for ease of file management.

I did Google for some specs as I saw that you posted part of the model number, and I verified that is indead a VGA port.

Just to get back off topic.....

I had a computer crash recently, so I decided to check out the newest technology and build a new one... The motherboard had tons of USB and firewire, and most surprisingly it had a single serial port header!!! But it did not have a floppy connector, an IDE connector, or a parallel printer port connector. I was happy that it had a serial port connector as I still have an old PCB3B Willem EPROM Programmer that I still use on rare occassion that I thought I could hook up there, that is until I remembered that it (the programmer) uses a 25pin parallel connection, not a 25 pin serial connection! Oh well, life goes on!

Ron I should have pointed out 9pin serial just thought you new what I was getting at
I did take a look at the model laptop you bought and did see the 15 pin connection
but nowhere did I see a 9 pin serial and I didn't want to second guess you,
Everything these days is built for speed and go go go

I have a lot of older toys which will go unnamed that I used back in the day
that used only 9 pin serial and 25 pin printer ports,then when usb hit the market with new OS systems
that stuff wont run on it even with the voodoo serial to usb adapters they sell on today's market
it's more of a timing issue I think when running a newer pc with a usb cable trying to run older software and dos stuff.

Anyway maybe you're friend has a cheap 95/98 or XP machine for you
or better yet a free one for the ones you gave him.

Windows Vista and 7 will not let any program have direct access to any hardware even a serial port, including DOS programs.
IF the programmers had listened to Microsoft back when DOS was king about trying to directly access hardware without going through the operating system calls
The program would not function properly on later operating systems from Microsoft.  Yeah the program may be a bit slower but it would work on any MS-DOS computer not just IBM and direct clones.

I had no trouble with using PSP with a USB to serial Adapter until Vista came out.
I had to come up with a work around for Windows Vista and 7.

 I have one that I got from Ham Radio Outlet to allow me to program my Yaesu VX-7R.
The adapter works under windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X.
It does work with PSP 2 and 3 under windows XP as a native or under VirtualBox in Vista, 7 and Mac OS X.
I could not get PSP to work under Vista or 7 directly.
Microsoft has killed off support of DOS programs in 64 bit versions of Vista and 7.
DOS programs may or may not work in 32 bit versions.

I do have to set VirtualBox up to run the USB to Serial Adapter in pass through mode, only driver loaded is a VirtualBox pass through driver in Windows Vista, 7 or Mac OS X and the actual driver for the adapter is loaded by Windows XP.
I also have to do this for my EasyPRO 90B programmer, no 64 bit support for it.
I am guessing those on here are running the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
