Help-I have a Bally 5500 triple reel machine. Error F81 came up. I got and replaced the battery then got 83F so I got clear chips. I followed the procedure in the original Bally manual. While holding the buttons down I herd different things so thought all was well. After 10 minutes of silence and no messages in the paid message area the red reset light came on flashing. I tried the entire procedure over again with no results-just the red flashing reset light on. The second time, the clear chips were quite hot. Did I fry the board or what? Appreciate any help. thanks.

That's possible, or maybe just the Saferam clear chips.  You may have inserted the chips backwards.  Did you try putting the mains back in to see if you get a code?

Thanks,
Wayne

the chips were in the correct spots. Now when I put the main chips in I get no error codes but the machine doesn't work either.

and correct direction?

Regardless, you may need a main board now. any traces burned off near the back of the board?

Thanks,

I put the chips in with printing pointed in the same direction as the main chips. No burns. Like I said all I get is the blinking reset light. Thanks.

Although original stickers would usually be oriented in the same direction, the printing direction is irrelevant. Never use the stickers as an installation guideline! You must install them with the NOTCH on the end of the chip matching the notch that is on the socket and printed on the board beneath.

Thanks Wayne. I was about to post that, but then I read that he used the stickers as an installation guide and I forgot..  arrow rotflmao

odd that they heated up then.  There is an untested as is board on eBay.  you may want to test your power supply first though.

Thanks,

It depends on which version of Mains you have installed. The 920000 series don't need clear chip; the 950000 series do.

Checked. Chips in correct. no bent pins.

Did you ever solve your problem? If not, don't forget a69mopar's post, which I copied below. If that's not the problem, we'll take it from there.

Toms5500 here again. I got a new board but same results-all I get is a flashing reset light on the board. No effect from pushing reset button. I had to transfer u18 and u20 chips from old board. Chips in correct, no bent pins in board. Could the 18 and 20 chips be bad. Power supply no good or what? Appreciate the help-really like this site.

I have just noticed that in the new board there is a u68 chip but none in the old board. Also, I have been asked where I am-I am in cold Minnesota.

Was this a tested working board or an as is board?  I never trust untested as is boards since I'm sure most have been tested but haven't passed.

Thanks,

It was a tested board I got from Rudys Steals. I talked with John and he sending me new game chips to try. If that doesn't work We are going to try a new power supply.

For some reason I had thought you had tested the power supply voltages.  OK, good luck.

Thanks,
