Why are the members email addresses visible when you mouse over the envelope icon?  They also show up in the HTML, which means they will end up on spammer's mailing lists.  Well, already have is more like it.  I can Google for the posts I made two days ago, so I know the email addresses went somewhere too.  Doh!

Even if I am not logged in, you can still see the email addresses.

You have the option of hiding your email address in your profile.

But it does make it hard to spam send you things.....

I use yahoo for a lot of my mail - I get about 50 items captured in to the spam folder per day. I get about 3 or 4 others that are spam that I kill off without opening.

What I have never understood about spammers is when they send me a message with a subject line of "qqqqqqquuuu7" do they really think that someone is going to open it.

When I was in the Netherlands fried spam is considered a delicacy. I chose to stick with the Indonesian influenced food.

I do however use it in Jumbilia, Denver Omlets, etc.

What I was trying to say is tha the 'hide your email address' function doesn't work.  Any Joe Blow can come in here and get anyone's email address simply by mousing over the envelope icon, even if you select to hide it in your profile.

The food called SPAM is disgusting.  Ever read how much sodium is in one can of that so-called meat?  And fat.

Of course, I suppose I'm a hypocrite, I eat Devilled Ham on Saltine crackers.

And my karma went down by two, so I suppose I've upset someone already.  Damn.

I'll post after I get it set up.  If they ever allow slots at the race track in this state, I may be able to make a second job learning to be a slot-tech.   reels hit 7's

This is because the email addresses are plainly visible in the HTML and quickly harvested by bots.  You will probably find bot names such as EmailSiphon and Cherry Picker in the web log files. These robots are malignant and are used by spammers to harvest email addresses.  They are usually looking for "mailto:" type links.

The hidden email feature needs to be fixed, but that's just my suggestion.  I'm using a Gmail account, which does an outstanding job of filtering spam and is disposable.  No such luck for many of the people here from what I can see.

Once on a spammer's email list, forever on all spammer's email lists.

I might point out that the posts in this forum show up on Google in less than a day and a half.  I Googled for an exact phrase I typed in one of these threads a few days ago and whammo, it was the first hit.

I am getting NO more spam than usual.....

To answer your question ROCKET... just cause JohnnyG noted this in his post doesn't mean we would get more spam...

The harversters are just like the google webcrawller... they go out and touch each page and its very easy to parse for the @ symbol. Just cause it appears hidden here - the email address is very visible in the HTML code that the harvester wouild touch so despite his post showing how to make it visible, it would have no bearing on how a havester would work - they either procure it or they don't.

I am getting NO more spam than usual.....

I have nine or so POP accounts and receive little to no spam.  Most of my accounts are fronted by a Gmail account with the same prefix so that if for some reason it gets out of control, I can ditch it and create another Gmail account.  This way, I never give out any of the 'real' email addresses unless it's when I email people I know/trust directly.  As an IT person, I detest spam and spammers to the nth degree.  I even use Mailwasher to filter my email before I download it.  Great little program too btw.  Allows custom filters that allow regular expressions so you can filter on information in headers, like IP addresses.  It took a while, but I automatically delete all email originating from China/Taiwan/Korea and other Asian countries.  I have no friends or business contacts there, so screw them all.  Wink

Ah, to test this, create a bogus email account comprised of nonsense characters that don't mean anything and make it your forum email address for a week or so and see if you get spam.  If you do, then it has to have come a bot that harvested it from this site.  Not that I have the time for this, but that's a sure way to test it.

Well, that's a good sign.  You'll know if a bot finds this site, trust me.

I am using Gmail too. I must get 100 spam emails a day, and it filters every one of them. It is excellent. My hotmail account does get spam, but not nearly as much. I use google for newsgroups which is a sure bet for spam.......

I wish that the email part of this site was not handled by links - it's a known way to harvest addresses. That being said, I have no other complaints, and the email thing is defenitely tolerable. Thanks to the admins for doing such a great job with this site!
