I've got a few machines. from EM to S+. Was thinking that it might be handy to have some tokens for the machines "just in case" (they're all quarter machines). In reading here and there, I've found that apparently some "quarter sized" tokens apparently AREN'T "quarter sized", and there's problems with hopper jambing, etc.

Before anyone asks "why tokens?", probably need to remind those in Arizona, Ohio, etc., that cash payout machines in most states aren't legal.  bawling

So. With machines like my old Fortune I and S-Slot (mechanical Coin Mech comparitors), what tokens are the best for quarter replacement? How hard are these comparitors to set up? And is there a specific brand of token that works well?

Thanks.

Good Question!

While the "Pachislo" machines will accept anything that even looks like a .984 token, the comparators in REAL slot machines wont.
One "Brand" I have used is the one with a picture of a "Cherry" on the sides of it.
The "Trick" to getting them to work is use only ONE KIND of token.USUALLY when ALL of them are identical they will work fine.
Avoid the "Grab Bag" deals on Ebay as they are a mixture of whatever was laying around.
Beware that some of the older tokens can be magnetic, totally useless (well they do work as a shim for wobbly furniture)
You should be able to buy them by the bag of 1000 for between 5 and 8 cents each. Watch the shipping charges.
Tokens that are the .984 type will not jam the hoppers, they go thru just fine.

Check with some of the vendors here or look for sites that specialize in home amusement equipment.
Prices will vary widely, shop around. New or used is up to you, I prefer the new ones as they are a lot cleaner.

new new new FOLLOW UP  new new

as brother Kirk mentioned above is all true . he forgot to mention the SLANT TOP OWNERS

FOR YOU FOLKS WITH IGT -BALLY -ETC SLANT TOPS with escalators !! you are stuck with quarters or nickels   >>>>>1.00 tokens are fine on slant tops <<

i did find a japanes skill stop seller who had 2000 .50 cent tokens i purchased several years ago . although a bit thinner than a kennedy half
it does not jam going up the escalator .. they also worked great in uprights .

A NLG member who once sold .25 cent identical size quarter tokens they did work . IN SLANT TOPS .

I found more than minimal jams because the alloy used was a bit to light for the coins minted .

THE QUOTE :Tokens that are the .984 type will not jam the hoppers, they go thru just fine. >>>>>>>>

new new newonly applies to uprights  new new new <<<<<<<<<

before you slant top folk go through a coin jam 1/2 way up the escalator .. its a pain in ass to get out at times !!
about the same as when the agitator desintigrates and clogs the works !!!

I guess what I need to expand on is that I have read reports from some people that many of the .984's are thicker, and they end up with jambs. I've seen the "cherry" ones here and there on ebay, good to hear that they work.

Again, I'd also like to know how to set up those old Coin Mech mechanical coin comparitors. I'd guess there'd be some type of counterweight kit or something involved? Or are most tokens close enough weight-wise to not be an issue?

Thanks again.

Ummm, there's no quarter used in the old mechanical comparitors. That's why I mentioned mechanical comparitors, and the older machines, so there'd be no confusion with the new comparitors. My apologies for not making it clearer. I know it's a piece of cake for my S+ - like you said, take out the quarter, and put in the token.

YOUR SAYING YOU HAVE RUN .984 QUARTER BASED COIN /TOKEN ETC ---IN A IGT SLANT WITHOUT JAMS ???

i have never ever seen this ??

I  OWN 12 IGT SANTS --2---PE POKERS on quarters to start .. the 984. is a wider coin than the std USA  quarter .

post a picture of the u.s. quarter on top of the 984.  you wll see the actual difference in size .

the only other possible way it worked was briefly they made a retrofit kit with escalator for quarter slant top hoppers that are scarcer than hens teeth to accept the 984. up the elevator without cocking to one side and jamming the entire shimabang up .. i saw one in my entire life ..

When the Casinos' first opened in Indiana  they all used tokens. so there are escalators made that will handle the .984 token, just trying to find one could prove difficult. I used to have some I'll check and see if I have any remaining.

As for you mech. acceptors, you can swap them out with a unit made by IMONEX,  located in Texas, they make a unit that will accept tokens from .900 to .984   and  American quarters.   works on all S, S+, PE,PE+ etc.

Happ sells them,  there is another company in Denver called Amusement Emporium that handles alot of the same gaming items that Happ sells, they have monthly specials and their shipping seems normal, they do have a good selection of lamps, locks, etc.

I recently purchased a Happ Trackball (for use in my MAME table) for much less from another Web site and no mystery shipping. They must have another tier of discounted prices.

NOTE: I am NOT familiar with new machine coin mechs, I only have the old mechanical slots. So anything stated in this post please take at your own risk!!

As super joker stated about using Cherry on both sides tokens and watching out for magnetic tokens.....

I used to have the Pachislo machines and I bought a lot of 30,000 "new cherry tokens" from "pokersuppliesco" on ebay.  their shipping is crazy, but I did a local pickup and got them for 2.9 cents each.  The thing I found is that they would work in all my pachislo machines EXCEPT for the ones made by Olympia.  Olympia produced machines had a magnet in the coin mech and always caused a Coin mech error code. For kicks, I dropped a token in a Dixie cup full of water, 3 weeks later it was a pile of rust!

I bought these tokens about 4yrs ago, so they may have changed the metal formula since then, but I don't know.

Although pricey, they do offer a 5 sample pack of tokens for $2.49 BIN

I use only brass colored tokens in all my S+ machines and never have an issue. I use the brass only and use the other mixed tokens on my Pachislo machines since they will take almost any type of token mix or match. The brass is also nice since it keeps the IGT tokens seperate from the pachi tokens.

See, I like the silver colored tokens and reall want to get rid of the gold colored ones. But I still keep the gold ones for the S2000 and do not intermingle them.
