Mine gets way hot if I leave it on in this Phoenix summer heat.... it is in the uncooled garage. So I only fire it up when I wanna use it.

I am more interested in saving the machine than saving the planet. Is there any problem turning the machines on and off. I know they are on 24/7 in casinos and am wondering if the slight power surge of turning the machine and the heating up and cooling down of the components is harmful. It turn my computer on and off, but it isn't several years old and been exposed to strangers pulling on it while exhaling toxic gasses at it.

There are no problems with turning it off and on...
If you tinker with the machines as much as we do -
we'd wear out the power switch! lol

The only slots that I know of that are tempermental with turning on and off are the WMS 400 and Dotmation series due to their power supply problems. Also I believe there were some problems with either reel touches or Barcrests ??    with lack of ventilation in the topboxes that were a problem when you left them going all the time. Other than that I think slots are pretty much workhorses designed to be on 24/7.

What gasses? 

  I'm real nervous about the on and off too - especially my bluebird.   Bought a $200 ups to keep voltage constant.

I like ro leave on for a week - off for a few days if I know I'm not going to use them.
But still don't know what's best.

My S2000 and Game King are plugged into a Monster Power Center surge protector.  I just flip the switch on the surge protector to on/off.  This is done every day.

If this helps, I run Casino boats and we turn them on and off sometimes 2-3 times a day. We seem to replace a lot of batteries, but I am not sure if that's not normal...

It depends on what machines you have.
The older Bally's like the Proslot 5500 and 6000 are notorious for eating up MPU batteries.
It's best to retro-fit them with battery holders for easy changes.
I'm sure that the settings get screwed up though and you're constantly RAM re-setting them.
The IGT MPU batteries seem to last longer.

SAME here    I turn mine on and off as needed but I DO turn them off and on at the machines internal pwr switch & NOT at a power strip or surge protector.    

I have NEVER had any issues using this method.    

When we lose power at the Casino I work at, we ALWAYS have at least 1 or 2 blown power supplies and large number of Ballasts for the fluorescents in the games usually also go south when we get the surge when power is restored, but this "seems" to be more with the IGT s2000's than anything else.  

I am a FIRM believer in turning each machine off individually so there is no stress

Hey Bunker, I agree but with over 4000 slots...It will never happen (unless I take a pay cut)  
Only the progressive controllers have that luxury

Okay then,
Power surge protectors run about $15 each and can handle 6 machines per unit.
4,000 machines divide by 6 = 666 surge protectors multiplied by $15 equals about $10,000.
I'd say to them that you're saving them thousands and
thousands of dollars by not installing 666 surge protectors.

Therefore they should give you an $8,000 raise in your yearly salary.  
Them 'em the other 2 grand is for parts...
Only problem is: you'll be in another tax bracket which may be unfavorable....

Reading this makes me want to start a new rants and raves post.   Although the S5500 had a hunger for batteries, the S6000 batteries can last up to 10 years, sometimes more.  The S-Plus is a mizer for batteries.  

Bunker, How many S6000s have you had that had a new battery and didn't last long due to their hunger?
