   Mikohn PSP and Win XP
« Reply #126 on: January 24, 2006, 09:27:56 AM »

Does anybody know if the Mikohn PSP program works under Windows XP? I've got it installed on XP now with com port 1 enabled using a usb to serial cable. I am getting strange errors like "no acknowledgement from controller 1" and error loading data from controller 1". The cable I have is good, it's been tested on another computer. It does send info back and forth to the controller. Sometimes you have to hit the f1/f2 buttons a few times but it does work sometimes. But more times then not it locks up and I have to kill it. Any thoughts?

I have a desktop and a laptop, both with Windows XP on them and they communicate fine using PSP 2.0.  PSP 2.03 is a bit problematic at times.  I presume you have pins 1 and 5 jumpered on your cable or the Mikohn device you are trying to communicate with?

I think your mileage will vary with PSP.  I have an older Dell laptop with Win98SE on it and it doesn't work on it.  I also tried Windows ME and it didn't work either, but my XP machines run fine.  Go figure.

idesign,

Did you re-try these Computers now that you have a working cable with pin 1 jumpered to pin 5 at the Mikohn device?

On XP - You can right click on the ICON and set it to compatability mode. This specifically will hook in some emulation to allow for hardware emulation - if you have a fax modem program running or other application that would communicate with these ports it can interfere. I have heard through other forums that there is PSP 3.0 that is a 32bit app. I can't find it on Mikons site so I currently am labeling it vaporware.

Hey Jeff and fellow PSP enthusiasts,
Could you please include the version of PSP in your messages and replies. It would help us 'success wannabes' when we do a search for PSP answers. This would keep us from bouncing back-n-forth between which version works with which O/S.

I'll get to the success plateau soon,
Mr. Bill

Hi Bill,

Take a look at the attached photos with and without that film you sent me.  It looks a lot better than even in the photo.  The lighting isn't the best in this room.  The funny part about it is that I didn't even laminate the film onto the glass, I just slipped it behind the display which is pretty tight to the surface of the glass.  I can't even tell that the film is just sitting there.

Yes I do have the cable pinned out correctly, like I said I've tested it on another (win 98) computer and it works ok. On the XP machine I have the compatibility set to work for win 98 and it still is quirky. Keeps locking up with different errors. I've also tried 2.0 and 2.03 versions with the same result. What the heck is going on?

CJ made mention to me that it just may have something to do with the serial ports varying from machine to machine.  I have the same problem with an old Dell using 98SE.

I would certainly try running CMD, moving to full screen (CTRL ENTER) then running PSP manually.
You should also check if you have any other software running that might be accessing the com ports.

You can also check to make sure that XP sees the computer the same way as how DOS wants to see it.
Right click on My Computer, Choose the Hardware tab, Go down to the COM & LPT settings.
On the resources tab of that entry you want to ensure you are using 03f8-03ff and IRQ 4
This is the native DOS range of that hardware. Secondly go to the advance button and perhaps lower the
FIFO settings.

Congrats,
That does look a lot better. As I like to say . . . . . . . . . .Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Jeff, is that a 'made for progressive' glass or did you modify the tracking bracket?

And yes everyone, it is ordinary 20% transparent smoke auto tint.

Thanks for proving my theory Jeff,

Any particular place you recommend picking that up - Walmart ?

Any auto parts store should have it. Unless you have a need for it, don't buy a bunch. Since Jeff said it works so great, I'll dish-out some of what I have left for the NLG members. I just need to find a more afordable way to mail it. It needs to ship flat or rolled. Any kinks will ruin it.

Jeff, did I send you enough to 'pass it along"? You pull off a couple feet and then mail it to Jay.  I paid for the first postage, you pay the next, Jay you pull some off and mail it to . . . . . . ? Is that what they mean by "paying it forward"?

Just a thought,
Mr. Bill

Jeff

Congrats,
That does look a lot better. As I like to say . . . . . . . . . .Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Jeff, is that a 'made for progressive' glass or did you modify the tracking bracket?

And yes everyone, it is ordinary 20% transparent smoke auto tint.

Thanks for proving my theory Jeff,

That glass, and a few others that I have are made for progressive at the bottom of the glass.  The opening is 2 X 17.5 instead of the usual 2 X 15.  All the glasss with that size opening are custom games for a casino.  I was lucky when I bought the glass I could also get a display to go with it.   The one in the photo is a Haywire Deluxe.  It's in my original RT slot, an older machine, that didn't have an internal player tracking system.  The player tracking system was hung off the side near the top of the machine.

Hey Jeff and fellow PSP enthusiasts,
Could you please include the version of PSP in your messages and replies. It would help us 'success wannabes' when we do a search for PSP answers. This would keep us from bouncing back-n-forth between which version works with which O/S.

I'll get to the success plateau soon,
Mr. Bill

Bill, the PSP software I am always referring to is the software located in the NLG download database under Mikohn.  There is only one version in there and that's the one to use.

ok, got my chamII's today.  It is identical to the eariler post that Jay placed describing his unit as a ChamII.  The prom on it says C2 V2.05 and the board has a label that says Cham 2,C/S LOG, 8Mhz.  When I power it up, the dipslay shows some options after I step through the options it eventually says "EMPTY".  I should be getting the con1 tomorrow. This thread mentions a two wire connection to the con1, but I see no 2 pin header (other than the power) on the board.  Where do I connect it to the con1?
