I ordered a burner and eraser a couple days ago and also ordered eproms in various sizes.  I didn't know about the ability to use 512s in place of the smaller eproms.  Sice I have never done this before can you tell me what burning with and off set means?

The 27C512 holds 8 times as much data as a 27C64. So think of it as having 8 'banks'. To use a 27C512, you have two options.

1. Load the data using offset C000 which put it in the correct 'bank'. How to set the offset will vary depending on the burner software.
2. Create a file that has 8 copies of the data. One in each bank. There are several ways to do this, but I use the 'DOS' command:

copy /b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 27512.bin /b

where 1.bin is the original file and 27512.bin is the resulting file that you just burn directly to the 27512. I use this in a batch file and just rename the original file to 1.bin before running it.

Take this copy /b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 27512.bin /b   I'm lost.

That is why you can just put it in a batch file (i.e. 27512.bat) and forget about it. You then just take the original file, rename it to 1.bin, and double click the batch file. Done.  Actually what I do is I have a 'working' folder, for example c:\burner. That folder has all of the conversion batch files and that's it. So then I stick a COPY of the original file in there, rename it and run the batch file. Then I can just delete the 1.bin file when I'm done. The next conversion will overwrite the output file 27512.bin.

You can also create different ones for different chips. For example

/b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 27256.bin /b

and call it 27256.bat

Of course it's just all a matter of personal preference and any of these methods will work.

Agree with Post

While I'll still use HxD to page copy my data files, I like your method. I used to do everything in DOS; they had to pull me kicking and screaming into WinBlows 95. bust gut laughing bust gut laughing

For those who choose to create a batch file, I strongly recommend Poppo's suggestion of using a working folder with a copy of the original file to prevent the accidental overwrites that will inevitably happen from doing any harm.

For those who don't understand batch files, they are basically text files with an extension of .bat which when executed, run each line in the file as if it were a DOS command typed in manually. There are also some special commands that can be used to test conditions and select different branches of instructions.

Just run notepad and paste Poppo's text into the file, then select "Save As" and make sure to add ".bat" to the end of your file name to override the default ".txt" extension. Double clicking on the batch file will run it. To re-edit it, right click and choose "Edit". It should open in notepad.

If the batch file is designed to make 8 copies of a file, it doesn't matter what size the original is. If the original is 64k chip it will make a file for a 512k chip. If the original is a 1mb chip it will make a copy for an 8mb chip.

<EDIT> Here's exactly what should be copied into the batch file. Remember to rename the copy of the original file "1.bin" before running the batch. The finished file will be "8.bin" (or "4.bin")

To copy 8 times over. I used the name 8.bin instead of 27512.bin because it will work for any sized chips. I'd call the batch file "Make 8X.bat"
Quote
copy /b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 8.bin /b

To copy 4 times over, create a different batch file.  Call it "Make 4X.bat"
Quote
copy /b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 4.bin /b

Once you copy the new "8.bin" or "4.bin" file back to the original folder, don't forget to rename it properly so you know what it is. Tongue Out

Coors,  +1 (Karma, or whatever) for taking the time to create those videos. propeller  However, my concern with paging the files in that manner is that it introduces a large margin for human error and is very slow. If someone accidentally misses the first or last byte when selecting the original file or accidentally clicks on the wrong address for any of the eight pastes, the file will be corrupted.

Using a batch file as Poppo suggests or using my keyboard method in HxD with <Ctrl>A and multiple <Ctrl>V commands are both guaranteed to always select the correct amount of data and to always paste it sequentially with no overlaps or gaps.

That's just my 2¢ FWIW.

You do not need the trailing /b, but you do need it as the first argument for the copy command.

copy /b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 8.bin

Works just fine, I suspect the copy command ignores the trailing /b.

Oh if I ever find a E(E)PROM programmer for a Mac I will have to show the mac users how it is done in HexEdit

Foster you might be right, but I actually checked before posting (because I had the same thought), and here's the official syntax for the copy command.
Note that the [/A |/B] switch can be specified for every source and destination file. It certainly seems redundant to me Scratch Head , but I didn't want our members posting back that it didn't work.

Stat garfield

Code:
C:\>copy /?
Copies one or more files to another location.

COPY [/D] [/V] [/N] [/Y | /-Y] [/Z] [/A | /B ] source [/A | /B]
     [+ source [/A | /B] [+ ...]] [destination [/A | /B]]

source       Specifies the file or files to be copied.
/A           Indicates an ASCII text file.
  /B           Indicates a binary file.
/D           Allow the destination file to be created decrypted
destination  Specifies the directory and/or filename for the new file(s).
/V           Verifies that new files are written correctly.
/N           Uses short filename, if available, when copying a file with a
               non-8dot3 name.
/Y           Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
               existing destination file.
/-Y          Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
               existing destination file.
/Z           Copies networked files in restartable mode.

The switch /Y may be preset in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.  Default is
to prompt on overwrites unless COPY command is being executed from
within a batch script.

To append files, specify a single file for destination, but multiple files
for source (using wildcards or file1+file2+file3 format).

I never had a problem leaving of the trailing /b DOS, Windows CMD will not change file type when copying a file, unless you force it to do so.
I have never tried to do a copy /b 1.dat 2.txt /a or a copy /a 1.txt 2.dat /b, I think we would get some strange results.

IF you leave it off (unless they changed the default action) it can truncate a file due to a End Of File (EOF) marker being in the file.
DOS EOF is a CNTRL-Z or ASCII 26.

The /B forces the copy command to use the actual file size or length and ignore any special ASCII codes (not act on them)

One of these days I will have to tell you how I kept people from using DEL, ERASE, FORMAT and a few other dangerous Commands in DOS on my computer(s).

With little experience with DOS, I for one prefer and use Coor's way of copying and paste. If I need to copy and paste eight(8) times, I would copy four times and then copy that four and paste one more time. If you take a good look at the last line of the original file before copying and then after pasting check the last line of the new file they should match. This pretty much eliminates human error going undetected.
Make sure you save the new file with a new name so the original is preserved!

Another thing I do with my old GQ-2X is ID any chip I put in the burner before reading/writing. Pressing ID shows me the chip size and manufacture as seen by the burner. (some old chips do not have this capability) This tells me everything is good before I proceed. Not sure if the GQ-4X does this automatically?

Those were nice video's Coors,  +1 (Karma, or whatever)

Interesting... Scratch Head 3 Scratch Head I think that I have an adapter from before the 054 as I have had it for many many years, (I had it before the GQ-4X even! Picture attached.) and I ran into a problem with some 4002 or 4096 chips not programming. They would blank check fine, but fail immediately when I tried to program them... Most, if not all, (CRS) were Hitachi parts, and I just assumed that I got a bad lot of parts. (more than 10-15 failed I think...) Maybe it is the adapter, and I may want to invest in the 054 that I always keep suggesting to people???

+1 (Karma, or whatever) for making me think....

Don't forget that the song was written by Carly Simon and released back in 1971, eight years before Heinz paid her to use the song in the commercial. She was quoted as saying that she wrote the song while waiting for Cat Stevens to pick her up on their first date.
