Select BASIC (EGADS!!!!) at the 102 menu screen and when you get the prompt, type

SAVE "RAM:SEND2.BA" <Press Enter Key>

OK, now I know how to post video, this was my attempt:

Thanks to all of you who helped me set this thing up.

Did you get that by using JACK1.DO, JACK2.DO, etc?

Brichter,

No, I had this loaded to the Demo.do.

There was a long chain about this sometime ago in this thread between myself and a few others.

I believe that I should be using the jack1.do etc.. but I've always had difficulty loading to them.

The message in the video actually got lost when the battery on the PCB had to be changed and I've not re-installed it. Now my interest is back again, I'll play with it some more.

Ok, thanks for that info. I've also tried using the jack(x).do files, and saw the same issues as you did getting them to load.

Which Mikohn display is 12.5"x1.5" with 14 cells?

Is that a LED5?

I've only seen led5's with the mini chameleon and the regular 12 cell display.  I've never seen a led5 with a 14 cell display.  Unlike the chamII+ the led5 would need a different eprom for a different sized display too.

Is it 70 pixels or 84 pixels accross?  (5 per segment = 70, 6 = 84)  if it's 70, it should be useable with a ChamII+.  84 would be for something else.

70, each cell is 5x7 pixels.

1 of the display, 1 of each of the labels on the controller (or display driver, whatever the heck it's job is!)

The controller doesn't seem to like PSP, but it does have DIP switches. Off to search the forum for info.

Well, that wasn't too hard. It only has one internal message programmed, says 0pts.

I'd imagine if I had a machine hooked up it would advance to say 1pts, 2pts, etc.

Anyone have an idea what special sacrifice is necessary to get it to play nice with PSP? Tried both jumped and non-jumped cable, used CON1 and OLD in PSP also. Since it has an internal message (or 3) it seems PSP should be the way to go.

I'm just curious if that was a progressive meter at all. Since it has a machine number maybe it was tied to the machine somehow to display tournament points?

Probably was set up for a tournament, but it's a CHAMI so it can do progressive also.

Guess I need to dig out the CON1 and see if I can make them talk.

You need more pins hooked up between J5/J6 on the CON2 and J4 on the CHAMII, I think.

On the CON2 side:

Pinouts for J5 and J6 are the same:
Pin 1 I/O GRND
Pin 2 RX M+
Pin 3 RX M1-
Pin 4 TX M1-
Pin 5 TX M1+
Pin 6 VI/OF

On the CHAMII side:

J4
1: I/O GND
2: TX+
3: TX-
4: RX-
5: RX+
6: NC (No Connection)

So, straight through cable 1-1, 2-2,... 5-5 is what you need.

Based on your ROM version of your CHAMII+, you may need a newer one to use it.  Not entirely sure, but I seem to remember that if you have a 4.x version of the software in the CON2, you will need 2.x version in the chamII+?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You need a device called a CON1 to drive the Cham44.
Just as a mater of taxonomy the Cham44  is also known as a LED4 (Link Extension Device).

To start you need a PC with a serial port. Preferebly running Windows 98 or earlier.
The DOS based software package called PSP talks directly to the hardware and 2000, XP and Vista commonly interfere with the software talking to the serial port.

The PC connects to the CON1 just long enough to program up the contents of the sign, and any kind of jackpot information you intend to display.
The connection between the CON1 and the Cham44 is a 2 wire connection. I have run it 60 feet and I suspect it can be a good deal longer.

The CON1 (depending on model) can connect up to 32 slot machines. (I have two units, one can connect to 5 machines the other to 32). it again uses two wires to connect to the motherboard of the S+. 1 wire connects to the coin in and the other to the GND pin. As coins are entered into the machine it increases the amount of the jackpot that can be displayed on sign. The chip on your LED4 is labled 1x2... I also have one with a 1x14 (yes a 14 panel long sign).

PC--->CON1----->2wire cable---->LED4--->Ribbon cable--->Cham1---->Cham1.
           |
           +------->Slot 1
           |
           +------->Slot 2
           |
           +------->Slot nn

Just so you are not confused by other posts. There is also a device called a CON2 or SuperController. It drives a device called a ChamII and it has its own display panels. it can also drive a type of sign called a supreme. Supremes are somewhat different as they can have background graphics like coins falling etc. This is loaded into the sign independent of the CON2 through a software package called a downloader but the backgrounds and such are triggered by the CON2. None of the hardware you have is compatiable with a CON2 or ChamII.

There is also another controller called a ChamII+ that is a standalone controller. (Note the + at the end). These are used internal to the machine and just drive a small internal display. Again this cannot drive your sign.

You can often get a CON1 from Joey - Call the NLG game sales number at the top. April often has them available too.

Oh one more thing. The con1 can drive multiple LED controllers.

I had 3 S+ slots. I mounted a display in each of the SLOTs. These small displays are driven by a LED5 controller. I had 3 such controllers.
I used a gateway (connects up similar to the LED5) so I could display the progressive amount on the screen of my PE+ video poker.

I had a 1x2 sign that sat up top of my TRON video game and then the 17foot sign that was built into the wrap around header of my bar.

You can find pictures of this mess in the restoration section......

thx Jay

was hoping whatever protocol the 2-wire interface used had been sniffed reverse engineered so that a PC could directly drive the LED4.

If I went to the expense of buying a CON1, would probably get a slot machine (or 4) to make it useful.... pity the state governments in Australia frown on private ownership

While I am asking questions... anyone got an idea of approx current draw of the displays? I was going to use non-ATX computer PSUs to power them and after reading about erratic behaviour when the 7805 regs don't have a heatsink.... guessing close to 1.5A.

Ok on that topic......of sniffing the link between the CON1 and the LED4 controller....

When you use PSP to program the CON1, you press F10 to write the message to the controller.

Given that I had a displays of different sizes. I used the CON1 to program one message into the 1x2, I would disconnect it and write and a different message into the 1x14, disconnect it and write a third message was programmed into the smaller LED5s (which given the font were kind of like 3/4ths of the size of a 1x2).

Once that was done all were hooked up in parallel. It seems that once the message is programmed it remains in the LEDn controller and that the new progressive amount is sent about 16times per second.

I had tried connecting this display output to the serial input of the PC. What I got was mostly garbly gook. I played with XON/XOFF, different word lengths, different stop bits. I tried displaying the output in both clear text and hex.

I had made the assumption that if I was receiving the same jackpot amount over and over I should see the same bit pattern repeating. This did not happen. I might still be wrong but I now think that this might be encrypted information. For instance if the TOP award sticker on a slot is changed from 2500 to 6000 and the top award is hit. The only real way the casino has to say how much the payout is, is the sticker behind the glass.... well the progressive is pretty much the same. They go on the value being displayed on the progressive. So if someone was able to manipulate the displayed progressive amount the casino would probably be required to pay out the displayed amount. Thus the data to the signs are likely encrypted. (my theory anyways).

I believe the Mikohn serial standard is RS-422, did you try it using that protocol?  I'm sure there's some kind of encryption in it too.

thanks Jay and rickhunter... I'll go see if the MAME guys found anything in rom dumps... hopefully more than nudie pachinko machines

I'm getting onto a sensitive topic with talk of encryption/decryption... so I'll leave it at that unless someone makes a breakthrough

We have no taboos here.....its all about giving New Life to old Hardware..... so if you are able to figure a way to make these things talk without a Con1 I am sure there are many others that would be interested in the thread....
