ok, got my chamII's today.  It is identical to the eariler post that Jay placed describing his unit as a ChamII.  The prom on it says C2 V2.05 and the board has a label that says Cham 2,C/S LOG, 8Mhz.  When I power it up, the dipslay shows some options after I step through the options it eventually says "EMPTY".  I should be getting the con1 tomorrow. This thread mentions a two wire connection to the con1, but I see no 2 pin header (other than the power) on the board.  Where do I connect it to the con1?

The LED5 or CHAM1 has a 2 pin connector.  The CHAMII has a 6 pin connector at J4.  RX- is at pin 4 and RX+ is at pin 5.  If it doesn't receive data from the CON1, try flipping the wires around.

great, thanks.  Where are you getting the connectors to build the harnesses for the S+ boards to the con1's?  According to the con1 book, it uses IDC CE156F20-4's, but everywhere I look, I have to buy LARGE quantities.  Know of a good source to buy just a few?

The 0.156" spacing is the size for power, CON1 to CH2 link etc.  The 0.100" spacing is for the CON1 with 32 machine interface.

Here is a link to Mousers online catalog page 991 of AMP 0.156" IDC connectors:

http://www.mouser.com/catalog/624/991.pdf

Here is a link to Mousers online catalog page 988 of AMP 0.100" IDC connectors:

http://www.mouser.com/catalog/624/988.pdf

They sell in single quantities and their website says - no minimum order.  However, as I recall there is a service charge if you don't spend $25 but maybe they dropped that???

ok, I'm planning out my harnesses now.  Which are the two pins that are required from machines to con1?  The electrical wirings on the S+ have a connector "j12" which as the pins I suppose you use for this application.  They are

1  Prog Winner
2  Prog In
3  Prog Ret
4  Prog Out

Reading the con1 manual, the two wires necessary are a comon plus a data wire.  Which one of those four are  the common and which one is data wire.  My guess is pin 3 is common and pin 4 is data.  Is that right?

As you are facing the machine, assuming your mother board is mounted in the rear of the machine, it's the 2 left pins on J12.

Yes, Prog Return and Prog Out. Perhaps, Jay or Idesign can tell you which one goes where?  One of them is common to all machines, and the other is specific to each machine.

And on the CON1, flip the board over on the PC side to see which pins are all tied together as the common pins.

As far as I remember Con I, J1, pin 18 is common throughout machines,  pin 17 not used and pin 16 (mach 1) though pin 1 ( machine 16) is coin in for progression of meter depending on increment rate.
Then you will have J2 pin 16 = machine 17 throught pin 3 = machine 30 coin in ...............

Cheers

ok, I've connected the con1 to my computer and can load and read jackpot data correctly.  I've also connected pins 1 and 2 of the con1 j3 connector to the pins 4 and 5 of the j4 connector con the chamII.  The status led's on the cham2 are as follows led1 red, led2 green , led3 off, led 4 red (fast blink).  The display reads "EMPTY"  Shouldn't it display the jackpot amount?  I've tried doing the test (menu option 8) and tried to do the cham tests, but noghing changes.

THe chamII also has some settings you can change and are set as follows
GRADR=255
IDADR=1
JPGRP_A=0
MFILE_A=0

What else needs to be done to get it working right.

I must admit it's been a long time since I worked with Con I, 1990 I think, as mentioned before "my brain might be a little frazzeled"as mentioned in previous posts by posters but what the heck. I might have the page confused and obviouse no other experts with con I on line at the moment, the page I am reffering to is the currency setting............................might be page 3   ??????????? aghhhhhhhhhhhh what the hell, just wait for the real answer......................just trying to help..................still convinced it was page 4, if so looks like some other settings might be incorrect in your PSP upload.

cheers

Well, I am in no way a CON1 expert but I did work with Jay and Joey getting Jays machines linked so here goes:

Actually, the empty message should go away the minute the CON1 is hooked up to the CHAMII correctly.  I read somewhere that it is sending the jackpot info about 5 times a second.  Empty indicates the Jackpot file is empty on the CHAMII and of course, the Farad CAP on the board will only hold the CMOS data for a few hours if that.

Is there a difference in any of the CHAMII LEDs when you connect or disconnect the link to CON1.  I am pretty sure one of the LEDs should indicate DATA being received at the CHAMII.  If no activity, try swapping the two wires going to J4 on the CHAMII.

Hm... The Led should flash regardless of the wires. Its not polarity sensitive.

There are two states on my LED5 display driver (Chami 1 Link) . In one mode it only shows the progressive amount and in the other it uses the message contained in JPOT.do. If JPOT.do is empty then that is the message you get.

You can go to the message page - fill in the Jpot.do file with some message - one of those can be a Jackpot token which displays the amount. Subsequently you then Press F1 to LOAD the message down to the display system.

Per Oz's earlier note Pins 1 - 16 go to each machine and Pin 18 is used as a common. Again polarity does not matter. These 2 wires go to the left two most pins on the machine.

No, that's exactly what I was trying to determine.  It would only flash if it was hooked up correctly.  When he turned it around, it stopped flashing.

This makes me think that you are getting data from the CON1 to the CHAMII.

I can't find any chart on the CHAMII but on the CHAMII+, the MFILE determines what and how the Jackpot is displayed.  You might want to try changing it to some other number than 00.  On the LED5, this is done with dipswitches like Jay has mentioned.  On the CHAMII+, it is done through the PSP software jackpot setup page.  I am not sure how on the CHAMII.  If you are seeing it as an option when you slide the switch over and use the two pushbuttons on the CHAMII board itself, then try and change it to another number and see what happens.

If I set the Mfile option to anything other than 0, it displays $0.00 (in various styles dependin on the mfile option number).  The jackpot is set to 10,000.00 on the con1.  As CJ pointed out if I reverse the leads on the con1-chamII connection, the 4th LED stops blinking.

Oh nooooo!!!!

From page 82 in the manual that CJ posted on PSP 2.0 software!!! here http://newlifegames.net/techforum/index.php?topic=809.msg3857#msg3857

• CON1 controllers use only CHAMI displays.
• CON1 controllers can use only one Random Game and cannot mix other game types with it
(that is, no additional progressive jackpot games).
• CON2 controllers can use both CHAMI and CHAMII displays. For CHAMIs, a Gateway is
also necessary.
• CON2 controllers using CHAMI displays can run up to four Random Bonus games.
• CON2 controllers using CHAMII displays can run up to eight Random Bonus games.

So it looks like I either need:

a Con2 controller
a LED5 (ChamI + display)

in order to get my linked progressive going.

Or get a chamII+ and use it standalone mode together with one of my displays from my ChamII's.

From my experience so far...The Cham1's use a different size of display than the Cham11's
The physical size of the display is smaller and the ribbon cable that interconects the display is smaller.

Now I also run a 1x2 (large overhead display) from my CON1 and it has a board in it that has 2 wheels (1-16) and I am not sure what that boards name is but it interfaces to the 2 segment display that has the same ribbon cable interface that the CON1 uses. I found the settings for this board in one of my manuals - I will try and look it up and get back to you.

I meant to say I need either a con2 controller to get my cham2's going

Or I could buy a standalong CHAMII+ logic board as it shares powersupply and display with the older chamII's

The standalone ChamII+ can drive two displays and I believe there is a way to gang your displays together to make them longer.
There is a setting that specifies the length. I don't believe the ChamII+ can drive a ChamII link.

I own a ChamII link thats with CJ so I have a vested interest in how to drive this and by what ?

I know the ChamII+ cannot drive anything else as it is a stand-alone or part of a linked group or standalone+secondary link.  It does share the display hardware with the chamII from what I gather though.  So I only need to get the chamii+ logic board as I have everything else.  I won't be able to link two machines, but at Least I'll have the multi-colored progressive display working.  And if I put the whole assembly inside a box and just have the machine harness come out, I can move it from one machine to the next and not have to depend on the award glass with the 2x15 window.

I believe that chamII and higher can only be driven by a CON2.  I read in one of the docs posted by CJ that there is something called an "Aquarius" something or other that is also supposed to be able to drive a chamII.

Even though I would be shooting myself in the foot for getting another cheap CHAMII+, here is the link to a current Ebay auction for just the board:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6248331846&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

And to really make it fun.  Lets all sign up for www.bidnapper.com and snipe the auction so no one will know what and who will get it until it closes.  It will then truly go to the highest bidder!!!!!!

Good Luck.

And yes, you are correct, it will directly replace a CHAMII on the power supply and use the same display board.  That is exactly what I did with the hardware Jay provided me (I had board and display, no power supply or harnessing).

Up for auction is a Cham II+ Standalone Progressive Controller for slot machines using the serial return protocol like the IGT or Bally series. It will also work with Atronic, Konami, P&M, Sigma and Williams machines. The Cham II+ can operate in three modes – Standalone, Linker (where a separate controller like a Con 1 or Con 2 sends progressive data to the Cham II+ to be displayed) or Linked Combo (Standalone and Linker data displayed).

Angharan, Noting the blurb above Ninja seemed to be having some trouble getting his CON1 to talk to the Chamii ? do you have any information on this ?? He seemed to think that he needed the CON2 to talk to it.

Ok, after reading several of the manuals posted here and elsewhere, I think I can confidently conclude the following:

Con1 will drive only ChamI (AKA LED5) display hardware.  I believe the new CHAMII's (including the chamII+) use RS422 as the serial interface to communicate with the Con2, whereas the old Con1 used something proprietary to communicate with the displays.

Con2 will drive CHAMII, CHAMII+,Mark1, Mark2, Supreme, AGL, And ChamI (with use of a gateway).

CHAMII+ is also a stand-alone controller and can be configured to be a linked display with a CON2.  No need to change eprom as it appears to be a configurable option.

CHAMII+ will use the same display hardware and power supply as a CHAMII (in essence the CHAMII+ replaced the CHAMII, as it has more options, can be a stand-alone controller or a stand-alone/linked, where the secondary jackpot can be a linked jackpot).

Can anyone correct me on this.

There is also 5 CHAMII+ boards up on ebay at the same time.  No power supply though.

Keep in mind that you can use a PC power supply to power these CHAMII's.

And yes, I purchased this exact type from April. They work, but it is obvious to me now that they must be reconfigured (programmed) for my IGT. IIRC, mine came out of a Bally machine shipment.
