cheapest con1 with a LED5.  As far as the wiring, it would be interesting to try one of those Telephone cable extenders that use your home's power grid.  I wonder if you can use those to transmit the serial signals used by the mikohn?

I thought I saw a simple short range tx/rx radio stuff that can handle serial communications

I cant think of where I saw them now

all they have to ahve is very short range, and not be mounted in the machine itself Probabaly in stand.

Nope thats not a LED5. It looks like a piggy back board but I am not sure for what.

A LED5 (also known as a Cham1) or a LED4 (also known as a Cham 4 or Cham 44) looks very similar to a ChamII/ChamII+
The board sits atop a Mikohn power supply.

If you have a ChamII+ you can set it to be in link mode and drive it from a CON2. The picture is basically the same as what I described before.
Note a ChamII (no plus) is simply a link mode controller and cannot work standalone. The ChamII+ is a standalone but can also do link. The link mode only controllers are a lot cheaper than the II+'s that can do standalone.

SLOT===CON2===CHAMII==Display.
or if you are doing the large over head signs

SLOT===CON2===Supreme
The supreme has the built in controller.

The CON2 is what is designed to take multiple machine input.
modified-that's better!

This post in it's entirety explains a lot!

But could you use a CHAMII to just display a fixed jackpot amount? No incrementing from coin-in, or does it have to be linked to a CON2 ?

A CHAMII needs a CON2 to display an amount otherwise it just displays $0.00.  A CHAMII+ can be programmed to just display an amount if that's all you want, but why not invest in a $5 cable to connect it to your machine.  That's all that's needed to make it function as a meter.

Nope.

Its standalone.

You need a 3wire cable that goes between the mother board and the ChamII+
Its easy to make.

You also need a 9 pin cable and the PSP program for your laptop/PC to be able to program the Cham II+

This picture looks like

Slot ===ChamII+ === Display

The CON1 and CON2 are link controllers used for connecting up multiple slots into a single progressive
The CON1 talks to another display board called a LED5 (small display) or LED4 (large display)
--- LED stands for Link Extension Device.

The CON2 talks to a CHAMII (note no +) which is a Link controller for the small displays.
--- This type of CHAMII is only LINK and cannot be used as a standalone controller, you find these cheaper than the ChamII+
--- The ChamII+ can be put into link mode and used with a CON2 so its quite versitile.
The CON2 also talks to Supremes which is a large display with built in controller (no link device required).

The picture looks like

SLOT1,2,3,4...etc =====CON1 === LED4 === Display

or

SLOT1,2,3,4...etc =====CON2 === ChamII === Display  (again note no + on the ChamII).

I get all that.
This unit is advertised as a CHAMII standalone, I don't see any "+".
Are you telling me it is a "+" because it says "standalone"?

There is a Mikohn help area that shows a lot of the parts but it kind of needs to be re-done.

Once I finish relocating I will be happy to pitch in.

A call to arms.  There was a thread on how to connect your s+ to a chamII+ step by step.

Haven't had a chance to look at it, yet, but it's 24 pages. Probably has a few gems in there that could be plucked out.

I know I did a lot of reading through posts to figure out the connections to, and the settings for my Bally, and ultimately it was your help, Rick, that got the job done. But I did get answers to many questions along the way.

Maybe a we could get a section together in the FAQ with simple pin to pin connections and software settings both on the Mikohn side and on the machine side for each of the main machine types.

Does that sound like a good Idea? I certainly could consolidate all of the information I got from everyone with regards to the Bally stand-alone as a contribution.

I purchased this Con1IS, (actually I bought three, with gateways).
I looks like it is a factory stripped Con1IF PWB.

The etches are cut and opto couplers are not installed on all but the first one and last three inputs.
I was hoping that I could connect my four machines to it, but I can only get the first input to work.
I'm thinking that is because it has a standalone eprom.
I was wondering if I could get it working with four machines by replacing the eprom, or is there something else that can be done.

Any thoughts?

Ed

I don't think that is the case. Its my understanding that the EPROM is the same regardless of 1 machine or 32.

Your jumper has 5 pins. 1 is common the other 4 are machines 1 thru 4.

Make sure your common is connected up to the common on each.

Ignore the gateways for now you don't really need them with the S+ but once we get you sorted on the CON1 we can play with those.

The board is just like what is shown on pages 20 - 21 of the Con1 manual.

P1 pin 18 is common (DataA), pin 17 is not used, pin 16 is machine 1.
The rest of the etches are cut, and the opto couplers for them are missing.
The cutting stops at P2 pins 3,2,1.
The book says P2 Pin 3 is machine 30 ground strobe, and 1,2 are not used.

Anyway, I've tried them all and only machine 1 is working.

OK, I'm next!
This thread is 86 pages long and growing.
I got my CHAMII standalone from April at Lemans1969. Can't ever go wrong dealing with them!
Trying to program through PSP.
ChamII is version 1.61
Picked up the rs232 straight through 9-pin cord and jumpered pins 1 & 5. (Tested with ohm meter to make sure)
Using my Windows XP home version to program.
This is what I get;
I always have $0.00 or 0.00$. I can move the dollar sign.
When I program "jackpot programing" I set F3 to sngl, F7 to $$$$, and I set a base value, current jackpot, increments, and then send it (F1)
Shouldn't I see current jackpot on the meter? If not, then when?
I go in and change the base value and then hit load (F2) and my last send returns, (proving that it went)
I have tried to send DEMO.DO and I get "default error, check controller #1" everytime. Sometimes display says "loading" , but nothing happens.
I was having fun!

Glad to hear it!  If for some reason your NOT having fun in a little while ...

One of the more annoying aspects of these things is that they have a nasty habit of not uploading the jpot.do file unless you send it just after power-up. The Jackpot amounts etc. seem to work OK, but if you're playing with changes to the jpot file, especially if your creating and testing messages, you may need to disconnect power to the Mikohn and re-connect it for each upload. You wait until the Mikohn display has JUST finished it's boot test sequence, and then press <F1>. Repeat as necessary, like it says on the bottle...

"lather, rinse, repeat"

btw, one of the BEST single words to ever increase a product's sales .. I'm referring to that last word. A second wash is usually not required for most people, but putting that word in the directions has sold countless more bottles of shampoo over the years.
more facts you wish you never knew

I have never had these problems with a CON1.....

You might want to try an older version of Windows. XP has a lot of trouble with serial communication that orginates from Real Mode Programs.
XP is used to everything going through a hardware extraction layer so when you try and communicate by talking directly to the hardware like DOS based programs (PSP in the case) do, sometimes things get a little muddled.

If you go to a CMD prompt (before starting PSP) you might try the command MODE CON1:9600,n,8,1 Then start PSP.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the help Jay. My problem is I'm time limited and just going too fast!!!
Need to slow down!
I now have good communication, didn't try your idea, just started over. (checked device manager, com port 1, had 9600 baud, 8 bit, 1 stop bit)
I saw my MFILE was at 5 on the controller , needs to be 0 for jpot.do to work.
When I changed it to 0, CHAMII rebooted and kept rebooting every minute or so!
Tried moving switch 2 over for MENU to change MFILE back, but just kept on rebooting.
Tried power down/up, no change!
Finally came up with Menu and I switched MFILE to 1. Everything ok. So I uploaded files and checked jpot.do.
This is what I have:
Start paragraph
block motion
speed command 1
flashing
jackpot token 8

All other files empty including DEMO - I emptied it....hmmm.....you don't think it needs DEMO, do you?

I resent and then switched MFILE back to zero. reboot...reboot...reboot, several times, until finally got it to come up in MENU config.
Switched MFILE back to 1. Ok again.
Now what??????

I will need to pass the torch to someone else on this.

I can assist in the programming of PSP but as I run a CON1 the hw issues you describe are quite foreign to me.

You might try completely re-initializing the Mikohn by setting the Birth command in the menu to Yes. Double check the manual for the exact Birth procedure.
After the rebirth, set your options as you want them in the Mikohn menus, and then reload your file and values.

I experienced an endless reboot during my attempts to set up my stand-alone, and I was sure there was nothing wrong with the code in my file, so I concluded that the data in the Mikohn must have gotten corrupted. The rebirth worked for me.
